Last Game Rewind
NEWARK, NJ - The NJIT men's basketball team avenged last month's loss to Stetson, defeating the Hatters 78-69 in ASUN Conference action at the Wellness and Events Center.
NJIT (8-18, 5-8 ASUN) ended a five-game losing streak with the win, which also put an end to Stetson's (15-13, 9-3 ASUN) four-game winning streak. The Hatters entered Thursday 8-1 in their last nine games.
"I think we played well in our last game at Liberty and it prepared us for this one," said Head Coach
Brian Kennedy. "We had a great 35 minutes against Stetson last time out and we were ready for this one."
Stetson scored the opening basket, but the lead was very short lived as
Shyquan Gibbs answered with a three-pointer to begin an 8-0 NJIT run and the Highlanders led for the final 39-plus minutes.
All-Time Series
Saturday's meeting is the 11th all-time between the Highlanders and Hatters, with the previous 10 coming in ASUN action over the last four years. FGCU leads the series 6-4, but the Highlanders have won three of four against the Eagles, including a two-point win last month in Fort Myers.
Last Three Meetings:
1/25/20: NJIT 56, FGCU 54 -- Ft. Myers, FL
3/4/19: NJIT 83, FGCU 78 -- Ft. Myers, FL
2/13/19: FGCU 57, NJIT 55 -- Ft. Myers, FL
Last Time Out vs. FGCU
The NJIT men's basketball team won for the fourth time in five games on Saturday, defeating host Florida Gulf Coast 56-54 in ASUN Conference action in front of 2,843 at Alico Arena.
NJIT (7-13, 4-3 ASUN) scored the first 10 points of the game and never trailed, but FGCU (6-16, 3-4 ASUN) was able to claw back and tie the game on three occasions in the second half.
Zach Scott's three-pointer with 1:46 to play tied the contest at 54-54, but
Zach Cooks answered with a runner 31 seconds later to put the Highlanders back in front by two. Cooks' runner was the final basket of the evening as NJIT was able to get a stop on FGCU's final two possessions to preserve the victory.
"We needed a bucket, and I was able to get a good look coming off a screen," explained Cooks. "They hit a big shot to tie it and had the momentum, so it was important to come down on that next possession and get the lead back."
Up Next
