The NCAA’s adoption of a name, image, and likeness (NIL) interim policy on July 1, 2021 created the opportunity for NJIT student-athletes to be compensated for the use of their name, image, and likeness.
The NCAA’s interim policy stipulates that compensation must be at fair market value. It also allows for student-athletes to be represented by an attorney, sports agent or marketing consultant for NIL related activities, but not for securing athletic opportunities.
The NCAA NIL interim policy does not allow for pay-for-play, recruiting and enrollment inducements.
Specifically, an athlete cannot be compensated for their athletic participation or achievement. Nor can a prospective student-athlete athlete be compensated based on their planned or retained enrollment at a particular institution.
