Last Game Rewind
Lynchburgh, VA - A late run lifted host Liberty past the NJIT men's basketball team, 62-49, in front of 4,745 spectators at the Vines Center on Saturday evening.
A layup from
Souleymane Diakite cut the Flames' (24-3, 10-2 ASUN) lead to just one, 35-34, with 12:30 to play in the contest. Liberty scored the next six points to get the lead up to seven and NJIT (7-18, 4-8 ASUN) couldn't get closer than five the rest of the way as the hosts held on for their fifth-straight victory.
All-Time Series
Thursday's meeting is the 11th all-time between the Highlanders and Hatters, with the previous 10 coming in ASUN action over the last five years. The series is tied 5-5. The Highlanders swept the season series last year, but the Hatters got revenge earlier this season in Central Florida.
Last Three Meetings:
1/23/20: Stetson 65, NJIT 64 -- DeLand, FL
2/20/19: NJIT 82, Stetson 77 -- Newark, NJ
1/24/19: NJIT 82, Stetson 59 -- DeLand, FL
Last Time Out vs. Stetson
DeLand, FL - The NJIT men's basketball team saw its season-long three-game winning streak snapped as host Stetson came from behind to win 65-64 in ASUN Conference action on Thursday at the Ollie J. Edmunds Center.
NJIT (6-13, 3-3 ASUN) scored the first basket of the game and led until a Stetson (10-11, 4-2 ASUN) three-pointer with 3:22 remaining in the game gave the hosts their first lead.
The Highlanders immediately answered with a layup from
Zach Cooks to go back in front and
Reilly Walsh added a pair of free throws with 2:42 to play to make it a three-point game, but Stetson scored the next six points to go ahead by three.
Souleymane Diakite's putback with just under two seconds left made it a one-point game and the Highlanders immediately fouled to send Kenny Aninye to the line. Aninye missed both shots to give NJIT one final chance, but the Highlanders' inbounds pass was thrown too deep and the Hatters held on for their third-straight victory.
Scouting the Hatters
Stetson was picked to finish at the bottom of the ASUN Conference, but the Hatters have been anything but a last place team. SU is 9-3 in ASUN action and sits in third place, just a game behind first place UNF.
The Hatters have won four in a row and eight of their last nine since losing to Florida Gulf Coast in early January.
Stetson is led by a pair of freshmen in Rob Perry (16.0 ppg, 5.1 rpg) and Mahamado Diawara (12.7 ppg, 6.6 rpg). Perry is shooting just under 45 percent from three-point range and Diawara is shooting nearly 60 % from the field.
Up Next
The Highlanders will play their regular season home finale on Saturday when they host Florida Gulf Coast at 4pm at the WEC.
NJIT will honor its lone senior,
Shyquan Gibbs, prior to the contest.
