Men's Lacrosse Loses Heartbreaker To America East Rival UMass Lowell

NEWARK, N.J. — Saturday evening saw emerging America East men's lacrosse rivals NJIT and UMass Lowell face off in a thrilling matchup between the league's two youngest members.

Despite its best efforts to replicate the victorious result of the two teams' first conference meeting last year, the Highlanders (0-8, 0-2 AE) fell just short as the Riverhawks (1-7, 1-1 AE) left Newark with an 8-7 win

Owen Corry - NJIT's leading goal scorer in 2021 - had his best game of the season against UMass Lowell, posting his first multi-point and multi-goal game of the year with two goals and an assist. Gage Adams continued his outstanding freshman campaign with his fifth multi-point game (1 G, 1 A) in his first eight collegiate contests. NJIT's other goals came from Collin Fogerty, Arthur Miller, Jack Bowie, and Eric Sherman while Logan Hone, Garrett Muscatella, and Brendan Geissel added the rest of the Highlanders' assists.

Corry also led the Highlanders with five ground balls while Teddy Grimley and Beck Gozdenovich each added four apiece. NJIT caused eight individual turnovers - one each by Corry, Grimley, Liam Brown, Lynch Raby, Josh Failla, Giuseppe Chiovera, Xavier Ritter and Jake Baumgardt

Brown played his fourth complete game in eight contests and stopped a game-high nine saves.

UMass Lowell struck first out the gate, putting three unassisted goals on the ledger in the first half of the opening period. Corry single-handedly cut the Riverhawks' lead to one before the second quarter began with both his goals at the 5:51 and 2:50 marks.

A lone Riverhawk goal early in the second quarter put UMass Lowell back ahead by two at the half (4-2) but the Highlanders countered by shutting out their guests in the third and taking their first lead of the game on a Hone-to-Miller connection (6:40).

The highs from the third were unfortunately replaced with more adversity in the fourth after UMass Lowell used a 4-0 run of its own to turn a 5-4 NJIT lead into an 8-5 UMass Lowell advantage with 6:01 left in the game.

A Jack Bowie goal less than a minute later (5:09) brought NJIT back to within two (8-6) and a late man-up goal from Fogerty with 17 seconds to go (8-7) put the Highlanders in position to try and force overtime but it was not to be.
