Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Falls To Stony Brook Despite Season-Best Offensive Output

STONY BROOK, N.Y — The NJIT men's lacrosse team put together its best offensive effort of the season but were still upended by the Stony Brook Seawolves 20-12  Saturday afternoon in America East action at Lavalle Stadium.

Logan Hone (2 G, 3 A), Gavyn Willson (2 G, 2 A), and Owen Corry (3 G) paced NJIT (0-9, 0-3 AE), recording a combined 12 points. Jack Bowie added a pair of goals, Arthur Miller, Gage Adams, and Garrett Muscatella chipped in a goal each and Colton Johnson added an assist.

Defensively, Billy Kroeger corralled a team high five ground balls and won nine faceoffs, Isaac Vanzomeren added seven faceoff wins, and Teddy Grimley had two of NJIT's seven caused turnovers

Liam Brown and Yanni Kalas evenly split time in the cage, with Brown making nine saves in his 30 minutes and Kalas stopping five shots in his.

1ST QUARTER
  • After falling behind 3-0, Corry put the Highlanders on the board with a shot from distance (9:21).
  • A quick three goal burst brought NJIT back even with Stony Brook. A connection from Johnson to Bowie (3:21), a man-up score (Hone to Willson, 2:53), and a second goal from Corry (2:13) tied the score at 4-4.
  • The two teams traded goals to end the quarter, with the Seawolves going up 5-4 and WIllson netting a second score with 28 seconds left to tie the game at 5-5

2ND QUARTER
  • Stony Brook opened the second with a pair of goals to take a 7-5 advantage but Adams, the team's leading scorer entering Saturday, picked up his first goal of the game to bring the Highlanders back with one, 7-6.
  • The Seawolves closed out the half with two scores to push their lead to 9-6.

3RD QUARTER
  • NJIT responded to Stony Brook's last two goals with the first two goals of the second half. Hone (14:00) and Miller (13:04) pulled the Highlanders back to within one, 9-8.
  • The Seawolves went on a 6-0 run to push their edge to 15-8.
  • Hone scored his second goal of the game with 25 seconds left to send NJIT into the final frame down 15-9.

4TH QUARTER
  • Goals from Bowie (6:34), Garrett Muscatella (2:52) and Corry (0:59) pushed the Highlanders over the double digit goal mark for the first time this season.

OTHER NOTES
  • NJIT's 12 goals were the most scored this year and the program's highest tally since putting up 14 in last year's America East victory at UMass Lowell on March 27, 2021.
  • After missing the last three games due to injury, Willson re-established himself with his best game of the season (4 points) after three previous games of three points apiece (3 A at Delaware; 2 G, 1 A vs Lehigh; 1 G, 2 A at Army West Point).
  • Corry's hat trick was the Highlanders' first since Miller's three-goal game in the season opener at Delaware on February 5.
  • Hone posted an NJIT season-high and career-high five points. This year's previous high for single-game points was four by Adams (2 G, 2 A) at Delaware and Hone's previous high for points was three (3 G) at UMass Lowell last season.
  • Grimley's two caused turnovers matched his career best from the Wagner game on March 5.

NEXT UP
NJIT will have a quick turnaround this week, closing their non-conference slate with a road contest at Marist on Tuesday, April 12 at 7 p.m.
