NEWARK, NJ--The NJIT men's basketball team closes its three-game, season-opening road trip on Wednesday when it travels to Ithaca, NY, to take on Cornell.Â
LAST TIME OUT
NJIT suffered a 76-47 setback to host Providence on Saturday at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Turnovers plagued the Highlanders (0-2) in the first half, as NJIT gave the ball away 14 times before halftime and the Friars (2-0) made them pay, jumping out to a 34-19 advantage after 20 minutes. NJIT was able to close the gap early in the second half, cutting the deficit to nine, 37-28, on aÂ
Zach Cooks three-pointer at the 15:55 mark. The Friars answered NJIT's run with 16 straight points, holding the Highlanders scoreless for more than seven minutes, en route to the 29-point win.
Brushing Up on the Big Red
Despite finishing in the top half of the Ivy League the past two seasons, Cornell was tabbed to finish in tied for seventh this season. Four Big Red players are averaging at least 10.0 ppg, including leading scorer Jimmy Boeheim (22.0 ppg). After dominating Binghamton in its season-opener, Cornell almost pulled off a miracle against Bryant on Sunday. The Big Red were down seven points with 20 seconds to play and cut the margin to just one. Boeheim's three-point attempt at the buzzer rimmed out and the Bulldogs survived. Cornell's top player from last season, Matt Morgan, signed a contract with the defending NBA Champion Toronto Raptors and was assigned to the Raptors 905 of the NBA G League. Morgan is the all-time leading scorer at Cornell and ranks second in Ivy League history in scoring with 2,333 career points.Â
Brian Earl is in his fourth season leading the Big Red. Cornell's win total has improved in each of his first three seasons, as has its Ivy League win total, which was 7-7 last season. Earl is a Princeton graduate and spent nine seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater. Earl's brother, Dan, is the head coach at VMI.
All-Time Series
Wednesday marks just the fourth time the Highlanders and Big Red will take the court, with Cornell holding a 3-0 advantage in the series. The Big Red has won each game by double digits and by an average margin of 19 points.Â
