Previewing NJIT vs. Boston University; March 21, 7:30 pm, Fleisher Athletic Center
Before this season, NJIT and Boston University had never faced each other in men's basketball. That changed back on November 19, 2015, when the teams squared off in what was NJIT's home season opener, as part of the multi-site Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Classic and the Highlanders came out on top 90-76.

In the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Classic, NJIT and BU were part of a grouping headlined by then-#2 Kentucky that also included UAlbany and South Florida. As it turned out, the Highlanders and the Terriers each lost to Kentucky and they both beat South Florida. In addition to the head-to-head win by NJIT, Boston U beat UAlbany (69-64 at home) and NIIT lost to the Great Danes (74-73 on the road).

More than four months will have passed since NJIT and Boston University first played, so the games don't quite have the feel of being in the same season. But for BU, with its long history, this postseason rematch in Newark marks the first time since 1959 that the Terriers have had a postseason game vs. a team they played in the regular season. In 1959, they played UConn in the regular season and then faced the Huskies again in the NCAA Tournament, which featured early-round games against regional foes whenever possible in those days.

A look at Boston University (19-13)
Having defeated the fourth-place team from the Patriot League, Army West Point, in the CIT opening round, NJIT will test itself against the Patriot League's third-place team, BU.

Boston University, which began its season with a 3-5 non-conference record, found its stride in early December and posted a 4-1 record from Dec. 10 through Dec. 28, before beginning Patriot League play.

The Terriers were 11-7 in the Patriot, which was good for third place in that 10-team league. The Terriers were then upset by American, 69-64, in the opening round of the Patriot tournament.

One of the storylines for Monday night will be the coaching matchup that finds BU's Joe Jones, in his fifth year with the Terriers going against Jim Engles of NJIT. For five years, the two coaches worked side-by-side at Columbia, where Jones was head coach and Engles was his top assistant. The combination separated when Engles headed to NJIT as head coach in April 2008, but they remain close friends.

The two first matched wits on January 9, 2009 in Engles' first season with the Highlanders and the Jones-led Columbia prevailed. .

Joe Jones owns a record of 89-71 at Boston University near the end of 5 seasons; he is 175-177 between BU and Columbia. .

A LOOK at NJIT (18-14)
NJIT and several of its key players appeared to benefit from the rested afforded between their upset loss in the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament on March 1 and their convincing 79-65 win over Army West Point in the first round of the 2016 CIT on March 16.

Junior Terrence Smith, who did not play in seven of the last nine regular season games due to injury, generated a season-best 18 points and shot 8-for-10 from the floor against Army.

Another junior, Tim Coleman, who played hurt down the stretch, broke out for his sixth double-double of the season, but first in more than a month, with 16 points and a career-best tying 14 rebounds vs. Army. In the process, he became a 1,000-point career scorer, the sixth for NJIT since the program began Division I competition in 2006-07.

And Damon Lynn, who has played through an assortment of injuries that would likely sideline other players at times in the last two years, went all 40 minutes vs. Army (his 14th game this season with at least 40 minutes) and scored 16 points, while handing out 7 assists and committing just one turnover vs. Army.

Lynn raised his season's points total to a program-record 582, erasing the mark he set last season when he finished his sophomore year with 578 points.

The junior also raised his total of 3-pointers to 101. Second on the national active career list for 3-pointers, Damon has made at least 101 in all three of his college seasons.

The game against Boston U will be the 33rd of the season for NJIT, matching the record number of games the Highlanders played last season, when they finished 21-12 and advanced to the CIT semifinals.

NJIT team stats and leaders:
Scoring (team 75.6 ppg; 1.4 ppg): Damon Lynn (5-11 Jr; 18.2 ppg); Tim Coleman (6-5, Jr; 13.8 ppg); Ky Howard (6-4, Sr; 12.6 ppg);
Rebounding (team 34.9 rpg; -1.5 rpg): Coleman (7.2 rpg); Howard (4.8 rpg);
Assists: Howard (139)

Steals: Lynn (52)
3-pt FGM: Lynn (101)
