A LOOK at STETSON (10-21; 4-10 A-Sun)Picked in a seventh-place tie with Kennesaw State in the A-Sun preseason coaches' poll, the Hatters went 6-9 outside the conference before starting conference play.
Â
A young team, the Hatters had an up-and-down time of it in A-Sun play, finishing with the #7 seed and a 4-10 conference record. However, one of their wins came against defending champ and 2015-16 regular season champ North Florida. And the Hatters closed the regular season schedule with an 80-73 win over Florida Gulf Coast, which made it possible for NJIT to gain the #2 seed and put FGCU in the #3 seed. Finally, Stetson was 0-2 against Jacksonville, which, like NJIT and FGCU was 8-6 in the A-Sun, but one of the losses to Jacksonville came in overtime.
Â
The message? Stetson is dangerous.
Â
Coming off a 9-22 record a season ago, the Hatters needed help from their newcomers and one, 6-foot-7 freshman
Derick Newton has stepped in as the team's top scorer (15.3 ppg) and is a strong contender for A-Sun Rookie of the Year.
Â
Sophomore guard
Divine Myles and junior forward
Brian Pegg (A-Sun-best 10 rpg) are two other strong performers for third-year head coach
Corey Williams, who was member of the 1993 NBA champion Chicago Bulls in his playing days.

Â
A LOOK at NJIT (17-13; 8-6 A-Sun)NJIT had a season-best 5-game winning streak from January 30 through February 13 that lifted the Highlanders into a 3-way tie for first in the A-Sun.
Â
Then came a first-place showdown at North Florida and NJIT was clobbered, 107-71. Two days later, the Highlanders visited the third team that began the weekend in the first-place tie and the NJIT scored a  73-58 win, which resulted in a 3-way tie for second place with FGCU and Jacksonville.
Â
Finally, NJIT visited USC Upstate and trailed nearly the entire game. Down 20 near the midpoint of the second half, NJIT rallied and took its first lead, 71-69, on a
Chris Jenkins 3-pointer with less than 7 seconds remaining. However Malik Moore hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer on the other end, marking the second time this season that Upstate defeated NJIT on the final shot of the game with less than a second left.
Â
Amidst all that, FGCU and Jacksonville lost, as well, making NJIT the #2 seed in the conference tournament.
Â
NJIT team stats and leaders:Scoring (team 75.7 ppg; +1.4 ppg):
