Atlantic Sun Conference Game: Lipscomb at NJIT (Wednesday, 7 pm)NJIT looks to return to the wins column when it wraps up the third in a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference home stand by taking on first-time foe Lipscomb, which comes in from Nashville, TN.
Â
With five of the 14 A-Sun regular season games in the books, NJIT has experienced a series of starts and stops in the last month-plus of games. The highs included a first-ever win over St. John's of the BIG EAST on national television on December 20, followed by an 0-2 start in NJIT's debut season as member of the A-Sun, albeit one loss on a last-second tip-in and a second loss on the road in overtime after the Highlanders climbed all the way back from a 21-point deficit to force OT.
Â
They followed the 0-2 start with convincing conference wins, the first at Stetson and the second at home vs. Jacksonville. Then came a showdown vs. defending A-Sun champ and current leader North Florida. Originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, the game was moved back twice, first to Sunday afternoon and then Sunday night with the arrive of Winter Storm Jonas, universally described as the worst blizzard to hit New Jersey in over 20 years.
Â
No one knows if the delay hurt, but it certainly didn't help the Highlanders, who fell to talented and red-hot UNF, 94-80.
Â
A LOOK at LIPSCOMB (6-16; 2-3 A-Sun)Located in Nashville, Lipscomb is one of three private institutions in the eight-member Atlantic Sun. A coeducational liberal arts university founded in 1891, Lipscomb is affiliated with the Churches of Christ.
On January 16, the Bisons were reeling, with eight straight losses and a 4-16 overall record, including 0-3 in the A-Sun. Then they beat Stetson and followed that with a convincing 91-75 win over Florida Gulf Coast, which was picked second in the coaches' preseason poll.
Â
Key to the Lipscomb win against FGCU was 19 3-point baskets, which tied the Bisons for the most made threes in a Division I game this season (North Florida broke the record later that day with 20 3-points vs. NJIT). On the season, Lipscomb has attempted 640 3-pointers (more than 29 per game) and made 244.
Â
Casey Alexander is in his third season as Lipscomb's head coach following a two-year stint in charge at A-Sun rival Stetson.
