With its first two Atlantic Sun Conference wins in the book, NJIT will face its most imposing conference foe to date when it hosts North Florida, the defending conference champion that was the A-Sun coaches pick to repeat in the preseason poll.
Â
The Ospreys, based in Jacksonville, have lived up to their billing, going 5-0 to open the conference slate, and they come to Newark with a 16-6 overall record that includes wins in their last 6 games.
Â
NJIT, playing its first season as a member of the Atlantic Sun, is 2-2 after being picked third in the coaches preseason poll behind #1 North Florida and #2 Florida Gulf Coast.
Â
The programs have faced off once before, but that was when both competed as members of NCAA Division II. UNF defeated the Highlanders (73-63) on January 3, 2004 in the consolation game of a tournament hosted by Florida Gulf Coast.
Â
A LOOK at NORTH FLORIDA (16-6; 5-0 A-Sun)The Ospreys are a loaded, battle-tested outfit.
Â
Picked to finish first by seven of the eight A-Sun coaches in preseason, the Ospreys had four players unanimously picked by the coaches for the Preseason All-Conference team, headed by Preseason Player of the Year
Beau Beech (6-9, Sr). He is joined as a unanimous pick by junior guard
Dallas Moore (6-1, Jr);
DeMarcus Daniels (6-8, Sr.), the 2014-15 A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year; and
Chris Davenport (6-8, Jr), last year's leading scorer and rebounder.
Matthew Driscoll has been head coach of the Ospreys since 2009. Before that, he was an assistant coach at several Division I programs, including Baylor, where he served for 6 years immediately before going to UNF.
Â
Aside from the Atlantic Sun Conference games, NJIT and UNF have one common foe this season. NJIT scored an overtime win over St. Francis Brooklyn on December 10 and the Ospreys beat St. Francis on a neutral court, 78-65, on November 28.
