Atlantic Sun Conference Game: NJIT at Stetson (Saturday, 3:30 pm)
Listen to a basketball coach long enough and it's almost certain you'll hear the phrase: "You have to play the full 40 minutes."

NJIT has played two games as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference and both games had pivotal moments with 4/10 of a second remaining on the game clock; that's 39 minutes, 59 and 6/10 seconds, not 40 minutes.

The first time, at home last Saturday, the game was tied, but visiting USC Upstate scored on a tip-in with 4/10 of a second remaining to win the game 80-78. Next, in the first road game at FGCU Thursday night, NJIT, trailing the entire game, got a pair of Damon Lynn free throws with 4/10 of a second left to force overtime. Unfortunately for the Highlanders, who fought back from being down 21 points earlier in the game, they fell short in overtime, 82-78.

Now, the Highlanders have traveled over 240 miles north and east in Florida from Fort Myers to DeLand and Stetson University.

As with most A-Sun games in 2016, this will be the first all-time meeting between the Highlanders and Hatters in men's basketball.

Aside from the new surroundings, NJIT is dealing with a three-game losing streak for the first time since November 2014, as the Highlanders lost their last pre-conference game at Yale and then the two razor-thin defeats to open the A-Sun slate.
Also important, being in a conference means that NJIT has to concern itself with standings and too many early losses would remove any margin for error as the conference schedule progresses.

A LOOK at STETSON (7-11; 1-2 A-Sun)
Picked in a seventh-place tie with Kennesaw State in the A-Sun preseason coaches' poll, the Hatters went 6-9 outside the conference before starting conference play on January 6 at defending champ North Florida and then visiting Florida Gulf Coast (picked #2 in the preseason poll). Those were decisive losses (97-79 at UNF and 82-53 at FGCU). But Stetson returned home to host USC Upstate (the team that edged NJIT last Saturday) and defeated Upstate in overtime (89-86).

Coming off a 9-22 record a season ago, the Hatters needed help from their newcomers and one, 6-foot-7 freshman Derick Newton has stepped in as the team's top scorer (15.9 ppg). He scored 30 in the win over USC Upstate.

Sophomore guard Divine Myles and junior forward Brian Pegg are two other strong performers for third-year head coach Corey Williams, who was member of the 1993 NBA champion Chicago Bulls in his playing days.

Stetson team stats and leaders:
Scoring (team 81.4 ppg; -3.0 ppg): Derick Newtown (6-7, Fr; 15.9 ppg); Divine Myles (5-11, So; 12.9 ppg); Brian Pegg (6-7, Jr; 11.4 ppg); Luke Doyle (6-5, R-So; 9.9 ppg)
Rebounding (team 35.3 rpg; -4.9 rpg): Pegg (9.2 rpg); Newton (5.6 rpg); Myles (4.3 rpg)
Assists: Angel Rivera (5-8, So; 88); Myles (83)
Blocks: Pegg (15)
Steals: Myles (30)
3-pt FGM: Doyle (38)

A LOOK at NJIT (9-9; 0-2 A-Sun)
After posting a pre-conference record of 9-7, their best mark after 16 games in program history at the Division I level, the Highlanders have hit a rough patch with an ongoing three-game slide.

Last season, on January 19 they defeated Maine, raising their record to 11-10 and they were on the winning the side of the ledger the rest of the way, finishing 21-12. This season, NJIT lost the opener to then-#2 Kentucky, but won the next three and eventually hit a season-high 3 games over .500 at 9-6 after beating UMBC on January 2.

NJIT had five double-figure scorers in the loss at FGCU, led by Damon Lynn's game-high 22. The junior has put up 20, 22, 22, and 22, respectively in the past four games, hitting 19 3-point baskets along the way. Tim Coleman has 65 points and Ky Howard has 64 in the same span, while Terrence Smith had 15 points and a career-best 14 rebounds at FGCU.

NJIT team stats and leaders:
Scoring (team 75.9 ppg; +0.3 ppg): Damon Lynn (5-11 Jr; 18.1 ppg); Tim Coleman (6-5, Jr; 14.2 ppg); Ky Howard (6-4, Sr; 13.6 ppg);
Rebounding (team 34.7 rpg; -3.4 rpg): Coleman (7 rpg); Howard (4.8 rpg);
Assists: Howard (78)
Blocks: Coleman (19)
Steals: Lynn (27); Coleman (26)
3-pt FGM: Lynn (66)
