NEWARK, NJ—
NJIT men's basketball continues its February home schedule in the Fleisher Athletic Center when it hosts first-time opponent University of Maine Fort Kent at 7 pm on Wednesday.
 
The Highlanders are looking for back-to-back wins six days after overwhelming Wheelock at home.
 
Matt Provence, voice of the Highlanders, will have all of the action here on www.NJITHighlanders.com, with coverage beginning at least 15 minutes ahead of the scheduled 7 pm tip. The coverage, which is available by subscription, can be accessed as a single game pass ($6.95).
 
The Highlanders are scoring 71.5 points per game (a total of 1,787, five fewer than their opponents), led by freshman Damon Lynn (16.9 ppg) and sophomore Terrence Smith (12.3 ppg). Smith is NJIT's top rebounder (6.2 rpg) and ranks 11th nationally in field goal percentage. Lynn ranks fourth nationally with 3.68 3-point field goals made per game.
 
Another sophomore, Ky Howard averages 9.5 points and 4.1 rebounds to go with a team-leading 91 assists. Lynn and Tim Coleman, a freshman, share the team lead in steals (22).
 
The UMFK Bengals are a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association, a group of over 80 institutions nationwide. The USCAA numbers programs from four campuses of the University of Maine, including UMFK, and also includes 13 branch campuses of Penn State University in its membership.
 
The town of Fort Kent is in northeast Maine near the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec. Fort Kent is site of the northern terminus of US Route 1, which extends south all the way to Key West, Florida. Fort Kent is nearly is nearly 700 miles from Newark, NJ, an estimated 11 hour, 40 minute drive.
 
UMFK, guided by 10th-year coach Eric Werntgren, had won its last two heading into a game Tuesday night in New York (lost, 70-63) before taking on NJIT on Wednesday night.
 
The Bengals have diverse backgrounds, with players from Maine (3 players), California, New York, Quebec, Croatia, Spain (two players), and Montenegro dotting the roster.
 
Three UMFK players average double-figure scoring, topped by junior guard James Givens (14.3 ppg). Next comes Fred Sanchez, a sophomore guard from the Bronx (12.4 ppg), and Mike McClung, a 6-foot-6 freshman (10.1 ppg). The top rebounder is 6-foot-7 junior Jeremy Bishop (5.2 rpg).
