The Highlanders, who began Thanksgiving Week with a tenacious 62-57 battle on national television in Milwaukee against Marquette, are on leg two of a 10-game stretch of the schedule that has NJIT playing nine games away from home.
The team is scheduled for 4 away games this season that call for air travel and 3 of the 4 take place between the trip to Milwaukee to face Marquette on November 24 and the trip to face Michigan in Ann Arbor on December 6, this game at Duquesne with a flight into Pittsburgh is in the middle.
After
Duquesne of the Atlantic 10 Conference, NJIT visits
UMass Lowell (the team that edged the Highlanders November 22 in NJ) and at Michigan (Big Ten Network)
NJIT comes home for a December 9 game vs.
St. Francis Brooklyn, a team the Highlanders have never beaten and the preseason coaches' pick to win the Northeast Conference.
Then it's back on the road to visit
Holy Cross, LIU Brooklyn, Central Connecticut, Villanova and
Lafayette, before the next home game on December 30 vs.
Saint Francis U of Pennsylvania.
A Quick Look at DuquesneJim Ferry is 1-0 vs. NJIT since taking over leadership of the Duquesne program, but the veteran coach (277-207 in his 17th season overall and 23-39 in his 3rd season at DU) has deep roots in the NY Metro area, having guided Adelphi from Long Island to the top of Division II basketball and then turning what had been a struggling LIU Brooklyn program into the Cadillac program of the Northeast Conference. ... As the head coach at LIU, Ferry led his Blackbirds past NJIT in two exciting games (89-82 in the 2010-11 season at NJIT and 84-74 in the 2011-12 season in Brooklyn. Each of those seasons ended with NEC titles and NCAA berths for Ferry's Blackbirds
Duquesne, which plays in the super-competitive Atlantic 10, is still in a building process and
Dominique McKoy is the only senior on the roster. … So far, Duquesne has not been challenged in going 2-0, with a 91-51 win over Division II Bluefield State and a 102-81 road win at Abilene Christian.
There are five Dukes who have appeared in both the team's games and are averaging double-figure scoring, topped by
Derrick Colter's 14.5 ppg. … Among players with two games played, freshman
Eric James leads the rebounders (6 rpg).
Colter was 8-for-9, including 7-for-8 on 3s for 26 pts vs. Bluefield State. Guard
Jordan Stevens, a junior college transfer, did not play vs. Bluefield, but exploded for 27 pts in 28 minutes in his Duquesne debut at Abilene Christian. … Junior
Micah Mason led the nation in 3-point accuracy last season, connecting on 56 pct of his 3-point tries (65-116). He's 5-for-10 from distance this season and Duquesne, as a team, is making 54.2 pct of its 3-pointers (26-48). … On all shots from the field, Duquesne is shooting 57 percent (69-121). … The Dukes' average margin of victory in the small two-game sample is 30.5 ppg (96.5-to-66) and their rebounding margin is 14 on the plus side (44 rpg-to-30 rpg).
For its part, NJIT will look to repeat important parts of its effort in losing by 5 at Marquette on Monday night. The Highlanders held Marquette to 35.5 percent shooting from the field (18-51) and outrebounded the bigger squad from the BIG EAST program, albeit by a slim 37-36.
The two NJIT seniors,
Daquan Holiday, who started, and
Odera Nweke, who played 25 minutes off the bench, acquitted themselves well, combining for 20 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks in the low post.
Damon Lynn, the sophomore guard, continues to lead NJIT in scoring average (15.8 ppg), while junior
Ky Howard continues the terrific start to his junior season. He is averaging 12.2 points, making 61.3 percent of his shots (19-31) and averaging a team-best 8.2 rebounds, an extraordinary average for a guard. He has led or shared the team rebounding lead in all five games to date. Lynn and Howard are also the two top assist men on NJIT, with 15 and 12, respectively.
