Marquette has won 1,539 games in its storied history. The 1977 National Champion, Marquette has sent 31 teams to the NCAA Tournament, that's nearly four times the total number of full seasons (8) Division I neophyte NJIT has competing at the top NCAA level.
Three players average double-figure scoring for the current edition of the Golden Eagles, who are 1-2 with a win over Tennessee Martin, followed by losses to Ohio State and Omaha.
Juan Anderson (15 ppg) is the top scorer and the top rebounder (6.7 rpg). Transfer guard
Matt Carlino is averaging 11 points and
Steve Taylor, Jr, chips in 10 ppg.
The head coach is
Steve Wojchiechowski, who is in the first chair on the Marquette bench after aiding
Mike Krzyzsewski at Duke from 1999 through being tapped to lead Marquette on April 1, 2014.
NJIT, which opened the season with a loss at St. John's, followed with a home win over Maine, but has fallen twice since, most recently in a 63-61 home loss vs. UMass Lowell over the past weekend.
Damon Lynn paces the Highlanders in scoring with an average of 16.5 points per game, down a shade from his freshman average of 17.2 ppg. However, he had 20 in each of the last two games and is coming off his best shooting game (7-15 FG, 5-11 3FG, 1-1 FT) vs. UMass Lowell.
Junior
Ky Howard is playing at a high level, averaging 13.3 points, but even more impressively 8 rebounds. A guard, he has led or tied for the team rebounds lead in all four games, including a career-best 12 vs. UMass Lowell. He has made 68 percent of his shots (17-of-25).
In addition to the prestige of national coverage against one of the great name programs in college basketball history, Monday night's game begins a stretch that will see NJIT play nine of its next 10 games away from home
Included in those nine road games will be a national TV game December 6 at noon vs. Michigan on the Big 10 Network from Ann Arbor and another FOX Sports 1 game at Villanova on December 23 at 7 pm.
