Presbyterian Takes a Pair from Highlanders

CLINTON, SC— Presbyterian picked up a pair of wins Saturday over visiting NJIT by scores of 6-1 and 7-1 at PC Baseball Complex.
 
Presbyterian,  with six wins in the last seven games, improves to 7-10 overall while NJIT falls to an even 4-4 on the young season.
 
Both games of Saturday's doubleheader were nine innings. Sunday's single contest, which will start at 1pm, will be seven innings.
 
The home team scored two in the second, three in the fourth and one in the fifth inning as pitcher Bud Jeter headed into the sixth inning with a 6-0 lead in the first game.  The Highlanders only run of the game came in the top of the ninth off an RBI double to right field by freshman Ed Charlton.
 
Presbyterian used three pitchers to win the 6-1 opening game on Saturday, as the win was credited to Jeter (1-3), who pitched six scoreless innings, letting up five hits and fanning four Highlander batters.  Michael Ricchi was the second pitcher, pitching two innings, and Ryan Morris closed out the game in the final inning, giving up the lone Highlander run.
 
The losing pitcher for NJIT was junior left-hander Tripp Davis (0-1), who pitched six innings allowing seven hits, six runs (five earned) with four strikeouts and three walks.  Freshman Mike Liegel and Joe Fasano each pitched a scoreless inning in relief for NJIT.
 
3B Jay Lizanich led the Blue Hose hitting 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI while LF Nathan Chong went 1-for-3 with two RBI's and one run.  RF Aaron Preston drove in two runs and leadoff hitter Gabe Grammer went 1-for-4 with one run batted in.
 
CF Charlton drove in NJIT's only run in the first game with a double to right field in the top of the ninth as the freshman finished 1-for-3 in the game.  The first five batters for NJIT recorded one hit apiece – Mike Rampone, Matt Weckerle, James D'Aloia, Tom Bouck and DJ Roche.  Senior D'Aloia and Charlton notched the only extra base hits for the Highlanders.
 
Presbyterian took control of the second game early tacking on six runs in the bottom of the second inning and added a single run in the seventh.  NJIT scored a run in the top of the fourth inning after a fielder's choice by Bryan Bleakley, scoring Tom Bouck on a Presbyterian throwing error.
 
Chandler Knox (1-1) was the winning pitcher for Presbyterian in the second game pitching seven innings and letting up seven hits.  Relievers Tim Corbin and Nick Ferguson each pitched a scoreless inning for the Blue Hose.
 
NJIT's Roche (2-1) took his first loss of the season, pitching the first five innings.  Roche gave up eight hits and six runs while striking out six with four walks. The sophomore RHP was selected as NJCBA Pitcher of the Week last week starting the season 2-0 in two starts.  He fanned 19 batters in only 12 innings while walking four, allowing three earned runs and seven hits for a 2.25 ERA.
 
RF Brandon Paul paced Presbyterian in game two going 2-of-4 with two RBI and one run.  SS Billy Motroni went 3-for-5 with one run while three different Blue Hose's recorded an RBI – Kenny Bryant, Chong and 2B Andrew Williams.
 
Leading the way for NJIT in game two was Rampone, who finished 2-for-5.  1B Tom Bouck went 1-for-3 with one run while Jeff Pizzi, D'Aloia, Roche and Charlton each recorded a hit.
 
NJIT and Presbyterian are scheduled to close out the series with a single game on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1pm.
