BALTIMORE, MD — The NJIT baseball team drops season finale to UMBC, 7-4, on Saturday afternoon.
The Highlanders jumped in front in the second inning when Ty Sallie drew an RBI walk to plate the game's first run. A double play later in the inning allowed Dillon Can to score and make it 2-0 before Cole Campbell added an RBI single to left field later in the frame, extending the Highlanders' lead to 3-0.
The Highlanders added another run in the fourth after Austin Francis worked a leadoff walk and later scored on an RBI double from Jack Stead, pushing the lead to 4-0.
Starter Brandon Peterson kept the Retrievers off the scoreboard through the first four innings, striking out six and limiting the Retrievers to three hits over his first four frames.
The Retrievers broke through in the fifth plating four runs on two hits and a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 4-4. An inning later, the Retrievers take the lead on an RBI single, making it 5-4.
The Retrievers added insurance in the seventh and eighth on a pair of RBI singles to extend the lead to 7-4.
Campbell paced the Highlanders offensively with a 2-for-5 performance and an RBI, while Stead added a double and a run driven in. Ben Robinson, CJ Wisniewski and Brody Levin each collected hits in the loss.
Peterson struck out six over 4.2 innings in the start, while Josh Willitts tossed 2.1 innings of relief and recorded three strikeouts. Anthony Anzaldi worked a scoreless eighth inning out of the bullpen for the Highlanders.
