NEWARK, NJ—NJIT completes the non-conference part of its men's basketball schedule with a game against Longwood on Saturday at 2 pm in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
Saturday's game will be the 11th in men's basketball between NJIT and Longwood, based in Farmville, VA, since 2006-07, NJIT's first season of Division I competition. The teams have played two games a year since then, with the exception of 2009-10, when they only played once.
The Highlanders, who won five games total in 2006-07, got two of the wins against Longwood that year. However, the Lancers took the next six contests before NJIT managed a 65-64 win last year in Newark.
In this year's first game, on Jan. 7 in Farmville, Longwood scored a wire-to-wire 85-70 victory over the Highlanders, just the third time a game between the schools has been decided by more than 10 points.
The Lancers will enter conference play next season minus this year's talented senior class, led by all-time leading scorer
Antwan Carter, an undersized, but tremendously effective 6-foot-6 center.
Carter, who averages 19.1 points and 9.4 rebounds this season, had 28 points and 12 rebounds when he faced the Highlanders in early January. He also had 29 points and 11 rebounds when he came to Newark last February. In fact, in six career games against NJIT, he has four double-doubles and has averaged 21.3 points and 10.5 rebounds. He has 38 career double-doubles, including 11 this season.
A team that plays a high-scoring style, Longwood averages 74.7 points on offense and allows an average of 82.9 points. The Lancers have topped 100 points scored twice, have allowed 100 points twice and have scored in the 90s four other times and allowed their opponents to score in the 90s four times.
Behind Carter, sophomore guard
Tristan Carey averages 13.5 ppg and senior marksman
Martiz Washington averages 11.3 ppg. Washington has made 78 3-pointers on the year and Carey has hit 50 long-distance shots.
For NJIT,
Isaiah Wilkerson is both the leading scorer (16 ppg) and rebounder (6.5 rpg). Wilkerson has set new personal records for points in a game (26 at Chicago State on Feb. 4) and rebounds (15 at Houston Baptist on Feb. 18) this month.
Chris Flores, who matched his season scoring high with 23 points in Wednesday's 72-70 overtime loss against CSU Bakersfield, is second on the team in both scoring (12.8 ppg) and rebounding (3.7 rpg), while leading in assists (78) and 3-pointers (50).
Ryan Woods is averaging 8.9 ppg and
Lamar Kearse is at 7.3 ppg, with five straight double-figure scoring games (62 pts, 12.4 ppg).
