Women’s Basketball Preview vs. Manhattan

The Highlanders return back home on Sunday at 2pm to host Manhattan after its first road victory of the season at Delaware State Wednesday.
 
NJIT's Uju Nwankwo and Rayven Johnson combined for 27 points and 12 rebounds as the Highlanders, who led by 18 at halftime, rolled to a 65-49 road victory.
 
Wednesday night's win for the Highlanders pays back a loss from last season, when they fell at home against Delaware State, 82-74, in overtime on November 24.
 
It was the second straight payback win for NJIT, which posted a 68-65 win over Wagner in the previous game last Saturday, reversing a 71-55 defeat at Wagner last December.
 
The Highlanders are paced by freshman Sarah Olson's 11.8ppg.  Olson is shooting 94 percent from the free throw line (17-18) and ranks second on the team with 5.8rpg.
 
Johnson follows Olson with 10.7ppg, playing in three games for the Highlanders while forward Nwankwo is averaging 10.0ppg and leads NJIT on the glass with 6.5rpg.
 
In Nwankwo's last two starts, the sophomore netted 14 points in each of the Highlanders wins over (Wagner 11/19 & Delaware State 11/23).  She posted a career-high 13 rebounds vs. Wagner.
 
Manhattan (1-3) registered its only win of the young season against East Tennessee State on November 19 led by Monica Roeder's season-high 35 points.
 
The Jaspers are coming off a 58-43 loss to Army, who finished with a 27-5 run over the final 10 minutes of the first half, which proved to be the difference.
 
Lindsay Loutsenhizer was the only Jasper in double-figures with a game-high 21 points.  She also grabbed four rebounds.
 
The Jaspers are led by two double-figure scorers – Roeder (16ppg) and Loutsenhizer (13.8ppg). 
 
Roeder is shooting 52 percent from behind the arc (13-25) while 6-foot forward Loutsenhizer ranks second on the team with 21 rebounds (5.3rpg).  Senior Schyanna Halfkenny is the team leader with 24 rebounds (6.0rpg).
 
In the last meeting between the two teams, Manhattan's Maggie Blair led three double-figure scorers with 18 points leading the Jaspers to a 62-48 non-conference win on December 1 in Riverdale, NY.
 
NJIT had two double-figure scorers, paced by Melanie Griffin, who finished with 17 points, two shy her career-high 19 points vs. Navy in the Highlanders 2010 season opener.  Griffin shot 5-for-7 from behind the arc netting 14 of her 17 points in the first half.
 
Last season, Manhattan finished with a 24-10 overall record, the 24 wins for the Jaspers was a school-record.
 
Manhattan reached the semifinals of the Women's Basketball Invitational.  In the first round, the Jaspers defeated Sacred Heart 52-48 and followed up with a 75-73 victory over Wright State.  The season came to an end as Manhattan suffered a 62-43 loss to UAB.
 
The Jaspers finished third in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in 2010-11 and was picked fourth in this year's Preseason Poll.
 
This season, the Jaspers opened its 2011-12 campaign by appearing in the Preseason WNIT facing Hartford.  Hartford defeated Manhattan, 64-45.
