NEWARK, NJ—Sophomore Lamar Kearse scored 18 points, leading five double-figure scorers for NJIT in a 113-61 men's basketball win over visiting Penn State Abington Monday night in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.

The 113 points for NJIT in its 2011-12 home opener against Penn State Abington were the most for the Highlanders since January 4, 1999, when, as a Division II program, they beat Concordia (NY), 118-74.

NJIT (1-1) used 13 players, none of whom played more than 22 minutes and 12 of whom got into the scoring column.

In addition to Kearse's 18 points, the Highlanders got 14 points from senior guard Sammy Schickel, who also collected seven rebounds. The other three double-figure scorers for NJIT were: senior Arjun Ohri (13 points); freshman Marques Jones (12); and senior Isaiah Wilkerson, who scored 10 to extend his string of consecutive double-figure scoring games to 19, including the last 17 games of 2010-11.

In addition to outscoring the visiting Nittany Lions by 52 points, the Highlanders also dominated the rebounding, 60-29, led by eight boards for senior center Ryan Regis.

Penn State Abington, playing its first game, got 11 points off the bench from sophomore guard Mike Colacci and 10 from senior guard Josh Howard, who started. Freshman Mike Marvin paced the Nittany Lions on the boards, with seven.

The game was never close, as NJIT outscored Abington, 18-1, in the first 6:35. The Highlanders later led 37-6 with 8:53 remaining and extended the lead to 36 by halftime, with the score at 61-25. Kearse scored 12 of his points in the first half.

The Highlanders led by at least 40 points for the last 13:49 of the game.

The next game for NJIT is Thursday night at 7 o'clock when the Highlanders visit UMass, in the first-ever men's basketball meeting between the schools.
