FARMVILLE, VA – The NJIT men's tennis team posted a pair of wins completing day one of the 2010 Division I Independent Men's Tennis Tournament hosted by Longwood University.
NJIT, who improves to 17-6 on the season, defeated University of Seattle and North Carolina Central by identical scores, 4-1. Friday's action will begin with Winston-Salem State at 8:30am and wrap up with host Longwood at 1:00pm.
In the first match of the day, Highlander's Diego Abreu and Carl Lundquist teamed for a 9-7 win at first doubles followed by an 8-1 victory at second doubles by Stephen Erickson and Bryan Keelan to capture the doubles points.
NJIT won the first three singles contests in straight sets en route to a 4-1 victory over Seattle. Individual matches are to be halted as soon as one team achieves the points necessary to clinch a victory.
Erickson won by identical scores 6-0, 6-0 at first singles; Lundquist was a 6-0, 7-5 winner at second singles and Abreu went 6-0, 7-5 at third singles.
Yusuke Kanehira earned the only point for Seattle at fifth singles.
North Carolina Central took first doubles 9-8 (10-6) but the Highlanders bounced back earning the doubles point with a 9-8 (10-5) win at second doubles by Abreu and Cosmin Chiujdea and a 8-1 victory at the third spot by Keelan and Dan Salomon.
Erickson, competing at first singles, won the first set 6-1 over Jack Waissen but fell in the second set 6-3. Erickson blanked Waissen in the third set, 6-0, to earn the point.
Lundquist and Keelan won in straight sets – Lunquist (6-1, 6-4; second singles) and Keelan (6-0, 6-0; sixth singles).
