Wilson’s 19 Can’t Help Highlanders Against South Dakota

Jheryl Wilson nets 19 points vs. South Dakota

Box Score

NEWARK – Junior guard Jheryl Wilson scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds, but it wasn't enough to prevent NJIT from dropping a 68-58 decision to league leader South Dakota in a Great West Conference contest Thursday night at the Prudential Center.

The loss dropped the Highlanders to 8-17 overall and 3-5 in the Great West Conference.

The Coyotes improved to 16-9 overall and 7-1 in the GWC, good for first place.

The Highlanders played the Coyotes tough during the first 10 minutes of the game, before Mitchell Bouie scored four straight points to give the Coyotes the lead for good at 15-11.

The Coyotes increased the lead to 18-11 and held a 27-18 lead at half, with Bouie scoring 12 of his 14 points in the half.  The Highlanders then fell behind by double digits early in the second half, trailing 43-32 after Tyler Cain scored on a put back down low with 12:05 remaining. Cain scored 16 of his game-high 20 points in the second half and grabbed 13 rebounds.

NJIT then tried to play catch up for the remainder of the game, but poor shooting hurt their chances of a comeback. The Highlanders connected on just 21-of-71 from the floor (29 percent) for the game and made just 11-of-20 (55 percent) from the line.

The Highlanders cut the lead to 54-49 with 3:18 remaining on two free throws by sophomore guard Isaiah Wilkerson, but couldn't get any closer. The Coyotes put the game away by connecting on 12-of-14 free throws down the stretch, including six straight from Kendall Cutler.

Freshman guards Chris Flores and PJ Miller had solid games for the Highlanders. Flores had 12 points and three steals before fouling out and Miller had 11 points and four assists in vain.

The Highlanders return to action Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. when they host North Dakota at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center. It will be “Senior Day,” as NJIT will honor graduating senior's Dan Stonkus and Gary Garris.

Stonkus is the lone player to participate in all four seasons of Division I basketball at NJIT, since the school went to NCAA Division I status.
