Canisius Tops Highlanders, 3-0

Trio of Golden Griffins each notch a goal and an assist

Sadie Mele made 7 saves vs. Canisius

NEWARK, NJ - Canisius freshman Kelly Reinwald scored the first goal of the game and assisted on the second, leading the visiting Golden Griffins to a 3-0 women's soccer victory over NJIT Friday night on Lubetkin Field.

The current Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week was one of three Canisius players to collect a goal and an assist, joining junior Sylvia Kowalski and senior Rebecca Shupe. Sophomore Laura Ellis, who assisted on Reinwald's first goal, also got on the score sheet for the Golden Griffins, who are 2-0-1.

NJIT's top player was goalkeeper Sadie Mele, who went the distance and saved seven shots on goal. She also made several do-or-die clearances as the last line of defense when Canisius was bidding to expand its lead over the last 20 minutes.

Reinwald's goal, the first of the game at 12:50, was something of an oddity, as she fielded a long pass out of the defensive half from Ellis. Controlling the ball outside the box, Reinwald sent the ball ahead toward the goal with a high floater that appeared to be an attempt to set up a teammate for a header near the far post. Instead, the soft shot kissed the post and caromed into the net.

The score remained at 1-0 until the 57th minute, when Reinwald took a feed from Shupe and sent a hard cross from the right wing to Kowalski, who fired the ball into the net from straight on. It was the third goal in as many games for Kowalski.

The Griffs closed the scoring in the 65th minute when Shupe deflected the ball home on a corner kick from the right corner off the foot of Kowalski.

Canisius goalkeeper Daniella Pettinari made two saves in recording her first shutout of the season.

NJIT will visit Drexel on Sunday for a 3 pm match in Philadelphia.
