Biography

2010: Mele, a senior biology major from Rio Rancho, NM, played every minute of every game in goal for her entire four-year playing career at NJIT. She was voted by the Great West Conference coaches as the Defensive Player of the Year in the East Division for both years of the conference’s existence to date, taking the honor in both 2009 and 2010. At the same time, she was the all-GWC goalkeeper in both seasons in addition to being a two-time team Most Valuable Player for the Highlanders. ... one of two winners of the 2010-11 Great West Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s Sportsmanship Award.

2009: Great West Conference Defensive Player of the Year in the East Division. ... Mele backstopped NJIT to a first-place finish in the East Division in the inaugural season of GWC play. ... she had a 1.34 goals against average, with three shutouts and a save percentage of .771 for the Highlanders, who were 4-1-1 in Great West play and 7-9-2 overall.

2008: Played every minute in the net with a 2.58 goals against average. ... in 19 games, recorded two shutouts and collected 140 saves.

2007: United Soccer Conference 3rd team ...  played every minute in goal, chalking up a 1.90 goals against average, with a .769 save percentage. In 19 games, she had three shutouts, seven one-goal games and two two-goal games. … USC Goalie of the Week three times … competed in swimming for NJIT and was part of school record-setting relay teams and broke the school record in the 100 backstroke at the Metropolitan championships in February.

 

Prior to NJIT: District I Player of the Year and second team all-state after ranking third in New Mexico Class AAAAA (largest schools) with a 0.55 goals against average as a senior in 2006 … Mele made 104 saves and allowed 8 goals … played club soccer for Rio Vista Futbol Club, coached by Chris Brennan … in addition to soccer, she was a record-setting high school swimmer and she finished in the top 25 in the New Mexico state high school golf championships.
