NEWARK, NJ—Sophomore Mary Wilks came off the bench for three goals and senior Joni DeMoor had two assists and two goals, including the first tally of the game, as visiting Monmouth scored a 7-0 women's soccer victory over NJIT on a rain-soaked Friday afternoon at Lubetkin Field.
A strong opponent, Monmouth is 3-1 this season after having won the regular season and tournament championships of the Northeast Conference, before advancing to the 2007 NCAA Regional.
DeMoor opened the scoring in the 18th minute when she knocked in a rebound after a sliding save by NJIT goalkeeper Sadie Mele of a shot by Andrea Lopez.
Four minutes later, DeMoor and Illiana Blackshear assisted on a goal by Lopez and Wilks, who came in with about 21 minutes left on the clock, added two more goals before halftime, as the Hawks took a commanding 4-0 lead at the break.
DeMoor got things going against 14 minutes into the second half and Monmouth added a goal by Alessandra DeTata, before Wilks wrapped up the scoring at 76:26.
Wilks, who didn't start either half, completed the hat trick with a substitute having checked in and waiting at the scorers table for a chance to replace Wilks on the field. It was the first career hat trick for the Monmouth sophomore.
In addition to the three goals from Wilks and the two goals and two assists from DeMoor, Monmouth got a goal and two assists from Lopez, along with the goal from DeTata and an assist each from Blackshear, Shannon Rogers and April Damurjian.
The shutout win over NJIT was the third whitewash in a row for the Hawks. Lia Ferro, who went all the way in Monmouth's previous two shutouts, started and played the first half against the Highlanders. Katie Buffa played the final 45 minutes in goal and neither Hawk keeper was forced to make a save.
Sadie Mele played all 90 minutes for the Highlanders and made four saves. Emma Vinski had a shot for NJIT.
The Highlanders will play their next six matches on the road, starting with a visit to Mt. Mary's in Emmitsburg, MD, on Wednesday at 4:30 pm.
