NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT women's basketball team will return to action on Wednesday, January 25 when the Highlanders visit UMBC in an America East Conference contest.
Game Information
Tip off is slated for 7pm inside Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena and will be streamed live on ESPN+ with in-game statistics available on UMBCRetrievers.com.
All-Time Series
Wednesday will mark the fourth all-time meeting between the two schools with NJIT holding a 2-1 all-time record over UMBC.
The series dates back to the 2006-07 season with UMBC taking the first meeting (78-51). NJIT has won the last two meetings: (58-44) in 2007 and 72-58 on January 12, 2022.
1K Milestone for Kenna Squier
Kenna Squier became the 12th player in the NJIT women's basketball history (5th in the NJIT Division I era) to reach the 1,000 career point milestone on Saturday, January 14 at UAlbany. Squier currently sits with 1,017 points, which is 10th all-time.
On Monday, January 23, 2023, Squier, who scored over 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds at Pope John High School had her jersey number (#24) retired.
America East Conference
NJIT will begin its third season in the America East and will play a schedule of 16 conference games against the other eight schools. The Highlanders became the 10th full member of the America East on July 1, 2020 and were selected to finish fourth in the 2022-23 preseason coaches poll.
The Highlanders currently sit in fifth place in the America East standings with a 4-3 record with UMBC in fourth with a 5-2 mark. This season, NJIT has wins over Binghamton, Bryant, UMass Lowell and New Hampshire.
Last Time Out
Visiting Vermont scored 41 first half points and cruised to a 65-32 road victory at NJIT Saturday night inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.
For NJIT, Maria Fux and Alejandra Zuniga each posted seven points followed by Kenna Squier's six points and game-best eight rebounds.
Block Party at Binghamton
The 13 team blocks at Binghamton ties the NJIT Division I era record for most blocks in a single season and one block shy of the NJIT all-time record (14 vs. Baruch on February 12, 1996). Trinity Williams combined for career-best six blocks, Squier career-best four blocks and Aria Myers career-high two blocks in the 62-57 victory at Binghamton on January 11.
Scouting UMBC
UMBC enters Wednesday with back-to-back wins and winners of the last three out of four contests, including an overtime victory against New Hampshire, 62-57. Ashia McCalla scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Retrievers in the victory.
UMBC with five wins in the America East have defeated Binghamton, Vermont, Bryant, UMass Lowell and most recently New Hampshire.
The Retrievers have two players who are averaging double-figures – Kiara Bell and KK White, each averaging 11.4ppg. Bell also tops the team in rebounds per game at 8.0 and 24 blocks. Bell ranks third in the America East in rebounding and fourth in blocks, just below NJIT's Trinity Williams who sits in third with 26 blocks.

NJIT will have a bye weekend and return to action on February 1 when the Highlanders visit New Hampshire at 7pm. In the first meeting of the season, NJIT registered a 53-43 victory in Newark.
