NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT women's basketball team will wrap up a two-game America East Conference road swing at defending conference champions UAlbany on Saturday, January 14.
Game Information
Tip off is slated for 3pm at McDonough Sports Complex on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, NY. The game will be produced on ESPN3 with in-game live statistics available on UAlbanySports.com.
All-Time Series
UAlbany leads the all-time series, 5-1. NJIT won the first all-time meeting in 2008 and the Great Danes have won the last five consecutive contests.
Nearing 1,000 Career Points
Senior guard Kenna Squier, who has played in 93 career games in a Highlander uniform is eight points shy of scoring her 1,000 career point. Squier will become the 12th player in NJIT program history to reach the 1,000 point milestone.
America East Conference
NJIT will begin its third season in the America East and will play a schedule of 16 conference games against the other eight schools. The Highlanders became the 10th full member of the America East on July 1, 2020 and were selected to finish fourth in the 2022-23 preseason coaches poll, receiving 42 votes.
NJIT has won its #AEHoops opener in all three of its seasons as a league member. The Highlanders swept their opening week of games for the second straight year. In 2021-22 NJIT started the year 4-0 in conference play.
America East Rookie of the Week Honors
Alejandra Zuniga picked up her second career America East Rookie of the Week honor, tallying 16 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal in a tight loss to Maine.
The 5-foot-6 guard from Madrid, Spain, finished 6-for-11 from the field and 3-for-3 from the free throw line in 26 minutes off the bench for the Highlanders.
Zuniga has reached double-digit scoring in the last four games and is averaging 10.3ppg and 2.5rpg this season.
Last Time Out
Sophomore Trinity Williams combined for her third double-double of the season recording 14 points and 10 rebounds to go along with a career-best six blocks in the Highlanders 62-57 road victory at Binghamton Wednesday evening in America East Conference women's basketball action inside Dr. Bai Lee Court.
NJIT, which has now won the last three meetings against the Bearcats, which have been decided by 10 or less points, improves to 3-1 in the America East and an even 8-8 overall. Binghamton moves to 2-2 in the league and 9-8 overall.
Williams, the Highlanders 6-foot-2 forward, finished 6-of-13 from the field and combined for a new personal-best six blocks. The six blocks are the most blocks in a single season since 2011 when Nicole Maticka recorded eight against Fairleigh Dickinson.
In addition to Williams, senior Kenna Squier scored 11 points and finished 4-for-7 from the field, six rebounds and four block assists, a new personal-best.
Freshman Alejandra Zuniga chipped in 10 points and a career-best five assists in 23 minutes of action while Lyzi Litwinko added eight points and seven rebounds. Maria Fux notched eight points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field and three rebounds.
The 13 team blocks against the Bearcats ties the NJIT Division I record (13 vs. Chicago State; March 3, 2012) and one block shy of the NJIT all-time record (14 vs. Baruch on February 12, 1996).
Block Party at Binghamton
The 13 team blocks at Binghamton ties the NJIT Division I era record for most blocks in a single season and one block shy of the NJIT all-time record (14 vs. Baruch on February 12, 1996). Trinity Williams combined for career-best six blocks, Squier career-best four blocks and Aria Myers career-high two blocks in the 62-57 victory at Binghamton on January 11.
Scouting UAlbany
Defending America East Conference Champions UAlbany enters Saturday's contest undefeated in the America East at 5-0 and and 11-8 overall.
The Great Danes, who played a competitive non-conference slate, opened the season 3-0 and competed at #3 Ohio State and Syracuse prior to the start of league play.
UAlbany has won the last five games and is led by Helene Haegerstrand's 13.9ppg which ranks fifth in the America East. She also ranks fifth in field goal percentage (.457) and has scored in double-figures in 17 out of 19 contests with a season-best 23 points against Bryant on January 11.
The Great Danes have two other players averaging double-digits – Ellen Hahne (13.4ppg) and Kayla Cooper (12.9ppg).
Cooper paces the Great Danes on the board at 7.0rpg. Cooper is coming off her first double-double of the season against Bryant, scoring 22 points and pulling down 11 points.

NJIT will return home and host Education Day on January 18 at 11:30am against Bryant. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
