UNION, NJ - The NJIT baseball team suffered a 13-7 setback to visiting Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon at Jim Hynes Stadium.
The Highlanders won the opener of the three-game series Friday, making Sunday's 12pm series finale the rubber match.
Stony Brook scored three in the first to go ahead early and doubled its lead to 6-0 an inning later. The Seawolves added two more runs in the third and another pair of runs in the sixth to go ahead 10-0 before the Highlanders got on the scoreboard.
NJIT's first two runs came courtesy of RBIs from
Jared Donnelly as the senior scored
Nick Hussey in the sixth with a sacrifice fly and
Kevin Putsky in the eighth with a single.
David Marcano followed up Donnelly's eight-inning single with a two-run home run, his sixth of the season, to make the score 10-4.
Stony Brook scored three times in the top of the ninth to go ahead 13-4, but the Highlanders didn't go down easy, scoring three times of their own in the home half of the inning. Hussey plated the first run of the frame on an RBI single that scored
Paul Franzoni before Putsky followed it up with his second home run of the season.
Putsky came off the bench in the sixth inning and finished the afternoon 3-for-3 with a double and the aforementioned home run.
Marcano and
Paul Franzoni each had two hits, while
Albert Choi and
Isiah Daubon each hit triples in Saturday's loss.
The Highlanders drew eight walks, but were unable to take advantage as they left 11 runners on base.
Sunday's game is NJIT's final home contest of the season and the Highlanders will honor their six seniors and seven fifth-year players prior to the game.
