Men's Lacrosse Defeated By No.16/19 Delaware In Season Opener

NEWARK, DEL. —  The NJIT men's lacrosse team opened the 2022 season on Saturday afternoon with a road trip to face the No. 16/19 University of Delaware Blue Hens. The Highlanders were unable to pull off the upset, falling to Delaware 19-9 at Delaware Stadium.

HIGHLIGHTS
1ST QUARTER
  • NJIT nearly scored the first goal of the game within the opening minute but Collin Fogerty's attempt was waved off by officials.
  • After surrendering seven straight goals to open the game, NJIT was able to score back-to-back goals in under 30 seconds from Darren Romaine (2:42 from Muscatella) and Muscatella (2:17)
  • Delaware added a final score to go into the second with an 8-2 lead.

2ND QUARTER
  • The Highlanders opened the period with a man-up goal from Miller (14:16 from Willson).
  • Fogerty eventually found the back of the net, scoring with 3:24 left in the half to cut Delaware's lead to 9-4.
  • The Blue Hens closed the half with a 10-4 edge over the Highlanders.

3RD QUARTER
  • Miller tallied his second goal of the game with 9:38 to go in the quarter (from Willson), converting with the shot clock running down.
  • Down 15-5, NJIT went on a 3-0 run, with Gage Adams scoring his first career goals in back-to-back fashion (4:01, 2:52 from Willson) and 2021 leading scorer Owen Corry netting his first score of the game with 2:14 left in the period.

4TH QUARTER
  • NJIT's lone goal of the period came with 1:41 left as Miller locked up a hat trick in his Highlander debut.

OTHER NOTES
  • Billy Kroeger's 20 faceoff wins tied former Highlander Tyler Stevenson's school record for faceoff wins in a single game. Stevenson set the mark by going 20-26 at Lafayette on February 9, 2019.
  • NJIT's 21 total faceoff wins (21-29) marked the first time the Highlanders corralled at least 20 faceoffs since the 2020 season opener against Hampton (2/1/2020; 20-33).

NEXT UP
NJIT will kick off its home schedule next Saturday (February 12) as the team hosts Lehigh. First faceoff is scheduled for 11:30 am
