Box Score Winston Salem, NC - The NJIT baseball team dropped the first of four games this weekend at Wake Forest, falling 16-5 to the host Demon Deacons at David F. Couch Ballpark.
WFU is now 5-0 this season, while the Highlanders are now 2-2.
Wake Forest came into the contest touting one of the best offenses in the nation and the Demon Decacons proved it early.
Ryan Fischer struck out a pair in a scoreless first inning, but the hosts were able to put up a crooked number in the second inning, scoring six runs to take an early lead.
WFU tacked on four more runs in the fourth inning to go ahead 10-0, but NJIT didn't go down without a fight.
The Highlanders cut the deficit in half with a five-run seventh inning highlighted by a pair of two-RBI doubles from
Julio Marcano and
David Marcano.Â
Wake Forest immediately answered the NJIT rally, however, with six runs in the home half of the seventh to go ahead 16-5 and put the game away.
David Marcano,
Ray Ortiz and
Jared Donnelly each had a pair of hits to pace the NJIT offense, while
Julio Marcano and
Paul Franzoni each finished with one hit. Ortiz's two hits were the first two of the sophomore transfer's career as a Highlander.
Alex DiBona relieved Fischer in the fourth innings and allowed just one run in 2.2 innings of work, while striking out three.
Tyler Cirone also had a successful appearance out of the bullpen for the Highlanders, striking out a pair in 1.1 scoreless innings.
NJIT will look to bounce back on Saturday with two more games against Wake Forest. The Highlanders and Demon Decons will begin the doubleheader with a 1pm first pitch back at David F. Couch Ballpark.Â
