Last Time Out: NJIT 85, Sacred Heart 75 -- Tuesday, Nov. 22 in Fairfield, CT
Miles Coleman scored a career-high 33 points on Tuesday to lift the NJIT men's basketball team to its first win of the 2022-23 season as the Highlanders defeated host Sacred Heart 85-75 at the William J. Pitt Center.
It wasn't just Coleman who thrived for the NJIT offense on Tuesday, however, as Mekhi Gray (15 points), Kevin Osawe (12 points), and Adam Hess (11 points) all scored in double-figures for the Highlanders, who shot a season high 50.9% (28-of-55) from the field and 50.0% (11-of-22) from three-point range in the win.
Highlander Highlights
* Sunday's game is the sixth of the 2022-23 season -- which marks NJIT's 17th participating in Division I, third as a member of the America East and sixth in the Wellness & Events Center (WEC).
* Miles Coleman poured in a career-high 33 points in NJIT's last game at Sacred Heart. It was Coleman's third-straight game with 23 or more points and the 10th time in 43 career games he has scored at least 20.
* Coleman is the only returner among the America East's top 10 scorers from a season ago. The senior averaged 15.6 ppg last season, which ranked fifth in the league. Coleman also averaged 5.7 rpg in 2021-22, the seventh-best mark in the league. His 20.2 ppg leads the America East as of Wed. 11/23.
* The 85 points at Sacred Heart were the most by an NJIT team in regulation since it scored 90 vs. Wagner on Nov. 16, 2019. The Highlanders scored 90 last season in a 2OT win at Lafayette.
* NJIT returns seven players from its 2021-22 squad and welcomed seven newcomers to this year's team. The Highlanders brought in four graduate transfers and three freshmen.
* Six of NJIT's 14 players have completed their undergraduate degrees and are working towards their Master's. Souleymane Diakite and Kjell de Graaf graduated from NJIT last May, while Justin Anderson (Bloomsburg), Adam Hess (E. New Mexico St.), Kevin Osawe (Arkansas-Little Rock), and Raheim Sullivan (Marist) come to NJIT from other institutions.
* Souleymane Diakite and Kjell de Graaf are both in their fifth seasons with the Highlanders.
* Paul McMillan IV is the highest-rated recruit to sign with the Highlanders. The 2021-22 Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year was ranked 126th in the Rivals.com rankings.
NJIT vs...Wagner
Sunday's game is the seventh all-time between NJIT and Wagner. The last meeting came on November 16, 2019 when the NJIT offense erupted for 88 points in a 19-point win over the Seahawks. Both teams were scheduled to meet early last season on Staten Island, but the game was canceled due to COVID-19 protocol.
NJIT vs. the NEC
NJIT is 32-14 all-time against Northeast Conference opponents after Tuesday's win at Sacred Heart.. Wagner is one of three NEC teams the Highlanders will play this season as NJIT beat the Pioneers on Tuesday and will travel to FDU in early December. Last season, the Highlanders took two of three from NEC opponents, defeating SHU and FDU, while losing to Merrimack.
Up Next
The Highlanders will hit the road on Wednesday when it takes on Cincinnati. Tip-off is slated for 7:00pm and the game will be streamed on ESPN+. Two Highlander freshmen, Paul McMillan IV and Tre Munson are both natives of The Queen City.
