Strong Third Quarter Powers Vermont to Victory Over NJIT

Kiana Brereton nets season-best 13 points



BURLINGTON, VT–Vermont rode a strong third quarter led by five double-figure scorers as the Catamounts defeated visiting NJIT, 71-49, in America East Conference women's basketball action Wednesday evening at Patrick Gymnasium.

Vermont picks up its second straight win of the season, improving to 9-7 overall, 9-2 in the league while NJIT moves to 9-8 overall, 4-2 in the conference.

The Catamounts were led by Anna Olson who combined for a double-double, a game-best 15 points and 11 rebounds followed by Emma Utterback (13), Jose Larkins (13), Catherine Gilwee (12) and Delaney Richason (10).

For NJIT, forward Kiana Brereton was the lone double-figure scorer netting a season-best 13 points adding five rebounds.  Sophomore Kendle Dalrymple added eight points (all coming in the second quarter) and seven points from Aria Myers.

Vermont got out to an early six-point lead, heading into the first media timeout, 11-5.  Aria Myers cut the Catamounts lead to half, 11-8, with a three-pointer from the left corner and Maria Fux knocked down a long jumper to cut the lead down to one, 11-10, at the 3:10 mark.  Vermont closed out the first 10 minutes on an 8-3 spurt for a 19-13 lead.

NJIT's Kiana Brereton scored six consecutive points in the second quarter to cut the Catamount lead to four, 25-21, at the 6:30 mark. The Catamounts extended its lead to double-digits midway through the second quarter, 31-21. The Highlanders answered with a pair of three-pointers by Kendle Dalrymple, pulling within four, 31-27, at the two minute mark.  Vermont went back on top by seven, 38-31, with an old-fashioned three-point play to end the quarter and ahead at the half.

Anna Olson led all scorers with 13 points on 6-of-7 from the field while grabbing six rebounds while NJIT's Dalrymple combined for eight points on 3-of-3 from the field and 2-of-2 from downtown.

Vermont exploded for 22 third quarter points, holding the Highlanders to just eight points, pushing its lead to 21, 60-39.

NJIT will return home for a pair of games, first hosting Binghamton on January 22 at 3pm and UMBC on January 26 at 7pm.
