NJIT Baseball Heads to Longwood for Three-Game Series

Highlanders and Lancers will Play One Game Friday, Saturday and Sunday

NEWARK, NJ - The NJIT baseball team is headed south for the second-straight weekend, this time traveling to Farmville, VA, for a three-game series at host Longwood.

Weekend Schedule
Game 1: Friday, 2:30pm
Game 2: Saturday, 12pm
Game 3: Sunday, 12pm

Game 1: Tyler Stafflinger (0-0, 5.40 ERA ) vs. Dominic D'Ercole (0-1, 8.10 ERA)
Game 2: Grant Vurpillat (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. John Gregory (1-0, 4.76 ERA)

Scouting the Lancers
Longwood is currently 1-4 on the young season after losing three of four games to Purdue-Fort Wayne and falling earlier this week to North Carolina State. The Lancers are hitting .278 as a team and have a team ERA of 7.20.

Series History
This weekend marks the first time NJIT and Longwood will meet since a four-game series in 2007. The Lancers swept that series. 

Opening Weekend Rewind
NJIT split its four-game season-opening series at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, NC. The Highlanders lost in extra innings to Monmouth on Friday, split a doubleheader with Penn State Saturday and won an extra-inning contest vs. Bucknell Sunday.

Living Up to the Hype
Julio Marcano was NJIT's lone representitive on the Preseason All-ASUN Team and the junior backed it up with a solid offensive performance last weekend. Marcano hit .400 (6-for-15) in the four games and knocked in a pair of runs. The Katy, TX, native belted the Highlanders' first home run of the season in the opener vs. Monmouth.

Hussey's Big Day
Junior first baseman Nick Hussey tied a career-high with 3 hits and knocked in a career-best six runs in Sunday's win vs. Bucknell. Three of those runs came on a home run that put NJIT ahead in the 10th innings. 
 
Rookie Report
Several Highlander freshmen played big roles in last weekend's success:
  • Albert Choi - .375 batting average, four hits vs. Monmouth
  • Jack Hay - .308 batting average, game-tying hit in ninth inning vs. Monmouth
  • Luke Longo - Started all four game (three at catcher), two-hit game vs. Bucknell
  • Ryan Fischer - Tossed five shutout innings out of the bullpen vs. Bucknell
  • Parker O'Neil - Team-high-tying five strikeouts in five innings over two games
Up Next
NJIT will head to Bucknell next weekend for a four-game series hosted by the Bison. The Highlanders won last Sunday's matchup between the two teams 8-5 in 10 innings in Cary, NC.
