NJIT Looks for Second Straight Win; Welcomes Saint Peter’s on Wednesday

NEWARK, NJ--NJIT will look for its second straight win of the 2019 season on Wednesday evening when the Highlanders host Saint Peter's at 7pm in NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.

The game will be streamed live on ESPN+. Michael Ventola, the voice of the Highlander women, will handle the play-by-play and color analysis from Dave Calloway.

A simple way to find ESPN+ is on NJIT's official athletics website, www.njithighlanders.com. Near the middle of the home page under the headlines section, an upcoming events calendar lists scheduled NJIT contests. After finding the event, click the camera icon to the left of the event listing. That brings you to an ESPN+ portal where you can access the desired program.

All-Time Series
Saint Peter's leads the all-time series, 4-2.  Last season when the two teams met, the Peacocks defeated visiting NJIT, 70-57.

Last Time Out
Five players scored in double-figures as the NJIT women's basketball team rolled to its first win of the 2019 season, 88-69, against St. Francis Brooklyn Tuesday evening in women's basketball non-conference action at NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.

NJIT (1-6) shot a season-best 59.3 percent from the field (35-for-59), 54.5 percent from three-point range (12-for-22) and 66.7 percent from the free throw line (6-for-9).

The 88 total points are three shy the NJIT Division I single season record, which dates back to 2006 when the Highlanders scored 91 points vs. Norfolk State.

NJIT dished out an NJIT Division I record 28 assists, surpassing the programs old mark of 26 vs. Longwood in 2009.

Freshman center Maria Fux led all scorers with a career-best 19 points on 7-fo-11 shooting from the field and 5-of-7 from three-point range to go along with four rebounds and three assists.

Classmate Kenna Squier set two new personal marks in points (18) and rebounds (7), shooting 7-for-10 from the field.

Senior forward Danielle Tunstall registered her 14th career double-double (third of the season) combining for 16 points and 10 rebounds, including a new personal-best mark of five block shots. 

Redshirt freshman Maddie Martin followed recorded 13 points and seven assists, which ties her personal-best mark (7 assists at Wagner), while shooting 5-for-7 from the field.

Senior forward Milena Bajic made her second appearance of the season, notching a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds to go along with four assists and two blocks.

Junior guard Ellyn Stoll chipped in nine points and five assists for the Highlanders in the win.

Scouting the Highlanders
The youthful Highlanders (1-6) are coming off its first win of the season against St. Francis Brooklyn 88-69 last Tuesday.  The NJIT roster features six true freshmen, one red-shirt freshmen, one sophomore, three juniors and three seniors.

NJIT is led by Tunstall, who is averaging double-digits in points (11.1) and rebounds (10.1).  

Squier is the other double-figure scorer for the Highlanders at 10.0ppg and is shooting 49 percent (26-53) from the field while Stoll sit at (8.4ppg).  Stoll paces the Highlanders with 14 three-point field goals made.

Scouting Saint Peter's
Saint Peter's (3-2) have won the last two-out-of-three contests, most recently an 78-77 home victory over Morgan State.  The Peacocks also have wins over LIU (89-74) and Copping State (82-57).

The Peacocks return unanimous MAAC All-Rookie Team selection Briyanah Richardson; the rising sophomore was one of the conference's top rookie scorers from a year ago after scoring in double-digits in 18 out of 29 games, including a season-high 39 points against Fairfield.

The Peacocks came away from its home-opener with a 78-77 win over Morgan State Lady Bears on Tuesday, in a back-and-forth battle which saw 18 lead changes throughout the contest, the Peacocks were able to outlast their MEAC opponent to improve to 3-2 on the season. Redshirt-junior Kendrea Williams paced the Peacocks offense in the contest, dropping a team-high 17 points while grabbing five rebounds and recording three blocks.

Saint Peter's is led by three double-figure scorers -- Gabrielle Harris (15.4), Taiah Thornton (15.0) and Williams (15.0).  Harris tops the Peacocks on the boards with 6.4rpg. 

MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll
Saint Peter's has been selected 11th in the 2019-20 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women's Basketball Preseason Coaches' Poll.  The Peacocks received 13 votes in the poll. The Peacocks finished the 2018-19 campaign with six victories, which was the best win total through the eight prior seasons.
