NEWARK, NJ-- The NJIT men's basketball team begins a season-long, four-game road trip on Saturday when it takes on Brown in Providence.
LAST TIME OUT
Despite career-high scoring efforts from
Zach Cooks and
San Antonio Brinson, the NJIT men's basketball team fell to visiting Binghamton, 77-75, on Wednesday evening in the WEC.
Cooks scored 35 points to break the NJIT single-game scoring record that he tied last season (34 points;
Damon Lynn) and Brinson tallied 22 points to go along with 11 rebounds, but the Highlanders (2-3) couldn't hold on to a double-digit second half lead as the Bearcats (2-3) rallied to earn the win.
Sam Sessoms scored 33 points for Binghamton, none bigger than his tie-breaking layup with 2.5 seconds on the clock to put the Bearcats in front. NJIT inbounded the ball the length of the court, but was unable to recieve the pass and Binghamton held on for its second-straight victory.
ASUN PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Zach Cooks was honored as helped lead NJIT to a pair of victories last week. The junior captain was named ASUN Player of the Week after averaging 22.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 4.0 apg, and 2.5 spg. It marked the third time in Cooks' career that he received the honor.
SportsCenter Top 10 for Number 11:
Senior captain
Shyquan Gibbs' heroic, last-second basket to beat Cornell was featured as the #5 play on Wednesday evening's SportsCenter Top 10.
Reilly Walsh inbounded the ball to Gibbs with 3.6 seconds to play and Gibbs took it towards the basket and finished an incredible shot between two Cornell defenders to put the Highlanders ahead with just :0.5 seconds to play.
Brushing Up on the Bears
Brown was tabbed to finish in fifth place among eight teams in the Ivy League. The Bears return 11 lettermen and three starters from last year's squad which finished 20-12 and qualified for the College Basketball Invitational postseason tournament. Brown won its first three games of the year defeating Bryant, Canisus and Quinnipiac all by seven points or less. The Bears are led by Brandon Anderson, who is averaging 23.8 ppg in 38.0 mpg. Anderson's best game of the season came against Canisius when he scored 32 points and dished out five assists.
