NEWARK, N.J. --- NJIT Women's Soccer (6-7-3) will begin the chase for its first-ever ASUN title on Friday as the No. 6 seed Highlanders face the No. 3 seed Liberty Flames in the quarterfinals of the ASUN Conference Tournament.

ASUN TOURNAMENT HISTORY
Since joining the ASUN Conference in 2015, NJIT has made one appearance in the postseason tournament (2018). The Highlanders earned the No. 2 seed in last year's bracket but were upset in the semifinals by No. 6 seed North Alabama.

LAST TIME OUT
NJIT faced Liberty at home on October 27 to close out the regular season. The Highlanders fell to the Flames, 1-0, on a rainy Senior Day.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
  • After missing the ASUN Tournament its first two years (2016-17), NJIT has qualified for the tourney the last two years.
  • Fiona Wright was named to the Preseason All-ASUN team. Despite being limited by injury early in the season, Wright led NJIT in goals (3; tied with freshman Lauren Chamberlain) for the second straight year. Wright became NJIT's Division I leader in goals scored after her two-goal effort vs. Rider (Sept. 5) and current sits at 14 career goals with two full seasons remaining.
  • Two NJIT players were named ASUN Defensive Player of the Week during the season. Goalkeeper Molly Saylor won the first award of the season (August 26) and defender Jessica Aseng earned another for the Highlanders on September 30.
  • Saylor transitioned into the starting goalkeeper role seamlessly in her first year of action. She finished the regular season in the ASUN top five in save percentage (.846; 1st), saves (88; 2nd), goals against average (1.02; 4th), and goals allowed (16; 4th).
  • NJIT set a new Division I team mark for shots in a game in a 2-0 win over Saint Peter's. The Highlanders took 30 shots, eclipsing the 27 attempts the team took against South Carolina State on November 7, 2007.
  • The Highlanders' shutout of Jacksonville on October 24 was NJIT's 25th since joining the ASUN and fifth this season.
  • NJIT ended its first season at the new Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium with a 4-1-2 home record.
  • Wright's two-goal game against Rider was the only multi-goal game of the year for the Highlanders.
  • Saylor stopped a season and career-high 10 shots against North Florida on October 6.

SCOUTING LIBERTY
Liberty moved up to third place in the final ASUN standings after defeating the Highlanders on the last day of the regular season. The Flames took five of their last six games, which included the only ASUN losses of the year for co-champions FGCU and Lipscomb. The Flames are led by Gabrielle Farrell (10 goals, 2 assists), Kasey Jamieson (5 G, 4 A), and Melody Jayroe (1.08 GAA, .823 save pct, 93 saves).

ALL-TIME SERIES
NJIT and Liberty have faced off twice in their history, with NJIT winning the first matchup last year (3-1 on September 23, 2018 in Lynchburg, Va.) and Liberty taking Sunday's contest, 1-0. This will be the first meeting in ASUN Conference play between the two teams (NJIT played North Alabama last year; Liberty lost to FGCU last season in their first ASUN tournament game).

NEW ERA FOR NJIT ATHLETICS
Women's Soccer's opener against UMBC was the first regular season game played on NJIT's new field, which was completed this summer. It  also marked the first on-campus contest for the Highlanders' three outdoor teams - women's soccer, men's soccer, and men's lacrosse - since November 7, 2015.
