Baseball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader at Maryland Eastern Shore; Stafflinger Pitches Seven-Inning Shutout


PRINCESS ANNE, MD—NJIT baseball evened its record to 5-5 with a doubleheader sweep at Maryland Eastern Shore, 8-4, in game one and, 7-0, in the nightcap behind a seven-inning complete game shutout by Tyler Stafflinger at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

Maryland Eastern Shore took a 2-0 lead in game one after one inning. The Highlanders scored three in the third and two in the fourth for a 5-2 lead.  After solo runs for the Hawks in the fourth and fifth, NJIT tacked on three runs in the top of the seventh to push ahead, 8-4, and secure the game.

Sophomore Tyler Stafflinger pitched a seven-inning complete game shutout, 7-0, in the nightcap, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out two Hawk batters. 

Game One
NJIT 8, Maryland Eastern Shore 4 (Final)

Junior RHP Sean Lubreski posted his second win of the season, improving to 2-0, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing four runs while fanning four Hawk batters.  Relief pitcher Tommy Derer and Johnny Malatesta blanked the hawks over the final three innings.

Maryland Eastern Shore's Toby Hoskins was credited with the loss, pitching 6.2 innings, allowing five runs and three hits.

LF Jesse Uttendorfer finished 0-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored while SS Justin Etts went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.

Four different Highlanders—1B Julio Marcano, 2B Tom Brady, 3B David Marcano and C Paul Franzoni each notched a hit in the game.  Brady and Julio Marcano drove in one Highlander run each.

The home team got things started Saturday, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run homer by Jamison Trower, giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

NJIT scored three runs in the top of the third and two in the top of the fourth, taking a 5-2 advantage.  With bases loaded in the top of the third, LF Jesse Uttendorfer reached on a fielder's choice, scoring C Paul Franzoni.  NJIT, with runners at the corner, veteran Uttendorfer stole second, scoring RF Matthew Cocciadiferro, for the Highlanders second run in the game.  SS Justin Etts drove in the third run in the inning with an RBI single, scoring Uttendorfer.

Highlanders David Marcano and Franzoni started off the top of the fourth with back-to-back singles and Marcano scored later in the inning on an RBI fielder's choice by Uttendorfer, his second of the game.  Uttendorfer advanced to second on a Hawk throwing error and Franzoni advanced home, pushing the Highlander lead to 5-2.

Maryland Eastern Shore added single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth, slimming the Highlander lead to one, 5-4.

NJIT tacked on three runs in the top of the seventh, extending the Highlander lead to 8-4.  Etts got things going with a single to start and stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Freshman Julio Marcano hit an RBI single, scoring Etts while 2B Tom Brady drove in DH Evan Pietronico, who reached first on a walk, putting runners on the corners for NJIT.  After a double steal by the Highlanders, Brady stole Marcano stole home and Brady stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Hawks catcher.

Game Two
NJIT 7, Maryland Eastern Shore 0 (Final)

NJIT scored three runs in the second and sixth and added a single run in the seventh, as the Highlanders evened its season-record to 5-5 behind sophomore RHP Tyler Stafflinger, who pitched a seven-inning complete game shutout, 7-0, in the nightcap.  Stafflinger (2-1) allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out two Hawk batters. 

CF Michael Anastasia went 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs, including a double and home run in the seventh innings, his second of the season.   3B David Marcano finished 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI while SS Justin Etts, LF Jesse Uttendorfer and C Edgar Badaraco each recorded a hit.

The Highlanders got things going in the third inning with runners on first and second when Badaraco hit an RBI single to left field, scoring David Marcano for a 1-0 lead.  With runners on second and third, Anastasia drove in a pair of runs with a single to right field for a 3-0 lead.

NJIT added three runs on one error in the top of the sixth and a single run in the top of the seventh on a solo shot by Anastasia, pushing the Highlander lead to 7-0.

NJIT and Maryland Eastern Shore will wrap up its four-game series on Sunday at 12pm.
