BRONX, NY—The NJIT men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened the 2017 season Friday at the Fordham Opener at Vince Lombardi Center.
The Highlanders broke a total of eight records in the opener (one women, three freshmen and four freshmen) records.
Senior
Daniel Leung took first in the men's 60 meter dash with a time of 7.01 followed by freshman Kwaku Amponsah at 7.07, good for second.
Top distance runner senior
Blake Brancato placed third in the men's 3000 meter run with a time of 8:49.75.
In the men's pole vault, NJIT finished 2-3-4 with
Kyle Russell placing second (4.27m),
Brandon Kong in third (4.12m) and
Calvin Gould in fourth with a height of (3.96m).
Junior Bill Forrester earned a second place finish in the men's shot put with a distance of 13.32m while classmate
Sawyer Gara took fifth with a distance of 11.74m.
In her Highlander debut, newcomer
Miku Okada recorded a first-place finish in the women's high jump with a height of 1.70m and women's pole vault cleared a height of 2.44m. Her height in the high jump is a freshmen and NJIT school-record. It is also an ECAC qualifying mark, which marks the first time an NJIT women has ever qualified for the indoor championships in any field event.
Freshman
Cassandra Raia finished third in the women's 3000 meter run with a time of 11:07.54
Kayla Breaux set a new freshman record in the weight throw with a distance of 10.92, surpassing the old mark of 10.82m held by teammate
Shannon Turner.
Vanessa Marques personal best mark of 11.75m in the weight throw and moves into third on the NJIT all-time list. Turner set a new NJIT record in the weight throw with a distance of 12.18m.
In the women's shot put, Turner and
Esther Daramola finished in second and third respectively with distances of 10.69m and 10.14m.
Highlander
Michael Haraka set a new personal mark in the men's weight throw with a distance of 15.51m, good for second place.
NJIT will return to action on Sunday when the Highlanders compete at the Fairleigh Dickinson Patch Invitational in Teaneck, NJ.
