NEW YORK – The NJIT men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened its 2016-17 season at the Fordham Season Opener on Friday.
The men posted a 5-1 record with wins over FDU, Iona, Providence and host Fordham, while the women went 3-2 on the day. The Highlanders posted 15 top 3 marks, 12 of which were new school records and numerous personal-best marks.
Freshman
Sidharth Vemuri notched a first place win in the 60 meter hurdles in his first collegiate meet with a time of 8.85, while
Alex Ortega followed in third.
In the triple jump,
Kwadwo Banahene finished with a distance of 13.50m good for first place and
Joe Skwiat finished fifth.
In the long jump,
Daniel Leung second first with a distance of 6.92m and Banahene in third with a distance of 6.58m. Leung also finished in the top eight in the 60 meter dash (7.24) and the 200 meter run (23.80). The time in the 60 meter for Leung is a top five all-time mark at NJIT.
Senior
Blake Brancato missed the 2016 cross country season due to injury and returned back to competition, placing third in his comeback meet in the 3000 meter run with a time of 8:58.75.
Also grabbing third place finishes were:
Billy Forrester in the shot put (12.47m) and
Michael Haraka in the weight throw (14.51m). Both were personal-best marks.
On the women's side,
Kim Deluca earned first place in the pole vault with a distance of 2.75m, while
Mary Henshaw and
Rhiannon Timpko took home second and third respectively.
Sophomore transfer
Elizabeth Paulina placed third in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:19.04. Paulina moved into the top 5 marks at NJIT.
In the shot put,
Yasmine Ghattas finished third with a distance of 10.23m and
Kiersten Chesonis came in fourth at 9.92m
