BRONX, NY—The NJIT men's and women's indoor track and field teams got its season underway on Friday afternoon at the Fordham Season Opener, held at Lombardi Center Fieldhouse on the campus of Fordham.
The meet which featured eight teams—St. Francis Brooklyn, Stony Brook, Iona, Providence, Fairleigh Dickinson, St. John's, Fordham and NJIT, was scored as a dual scoring meet.
Senior sprinter
Jason Chippy captured the 60-meter title with a time of 7.24, while teammate
Ray Walker took third at 7.35.
Sophomore
Alex Ortega won the men's 400-meter, clocking in at 51.13 to earn five points for NJIT. Three Highlanders—
Christopher Prasek,
Kadeem Spencer, and
Joe Boyles finished 10th, 11th, and 12th, respectively.
Freshman
Dhruv Banerjee picked up a first-place finish in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.60. while senior
Michael Parada finished third at 9.35.
Junior
Emmanuel Agyen placed third in the men's 200 meters, clocking in at 23.78. Chippy and Walker finished in the top 9 for the Highlanders.
Calvin Gould, the Highlanders freshman pole vaulter, recorded a first-place finish with a height of 3.96m (12-11.75).
In the men's shot put,
Patrick Quinn placed second with a mark of 12.66m (41-06.50) while
Sawyer Gara placed third at 11.91m (39-01).
On the women's side, sophomore
Delaney Silvestri placed in the top 4 in the women's 60-meter finals, clocking in at 8.38. Teammate
Trish Roche finished ninth with a time of 8.82, while
Rhiannon Timpko and
Mary Henshaw placed 11th and 12th for the Highlanders. Henshaw recorded a height of 2.74m (8-11.75) in the women's pole vault.
In the women's long jump, junior Cristina DeCristofaro and
Alison Schroeder finished in fourth and fifth, respectively, for the Highlanders with marks of 4.97m (16-03.75) and 4.90m (16-0). Schroeder picked up a third-place finish in the women's shot put with a distance of 11.05m (36-03) and a fourth-place finish in the women's high jump at 1.42m (4-07.75).
"This was a great start for us which included four school records (freshman and varsity pole vault records for Gould, long jump for DeCristofaro and freshman weight record for Michael Haraka)," head coach Al Alonso commented on his team's performance in the indoor season opener.NJIT will have a quick turnaround and return to action on Sunday at the FDU Patch Invitational.
