Track and Field Competes at Monmouth Season Opener

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ—The NJIT men's and women track and field teams competed at the Monmouth Season Opener, a two-day event in rainy conditions.
 
The Highlanders top performer on the day was junior John Porteous, who recorded a first-place finish in the men's 400 meter dash crossing the finish line at 48.82 and another first-place finish in the 200 meter dash clocking in at 21.64
 
NJIT's Jason Poppe earned a second-place finish in the men's triple jump earning eight points for the Highlanders with a distance of 12.77m and added a fifth-place finish in the men's 110 meter hurdles clocking in with a time of 17.61.
 
In the men's 10,000 meter run, freshman Zakaria Fouad finished in the top 5 with a time of 33:40.82.  Highlanders Kevin Ratigan and Arthur Smith also represented NJIT in the event, finishing seventh and twelfth respectively.
 
In the men's 100 meter dash, freshman Emmanuel Agyen was the top finisher for the Highlanders placing fourth with a time of 12.19.  Agyen placed sixth in the men's long jump with a distance of 5.97m followed by teammate Kwadwo Banahene with a distance of 5.94m.
 
Michael Martins and Blake Brancato finished side by side (ninth/tenth) place for the Highlanders in the men's 3000 meter steeplechase,
 
Senior Scott Rizzo picked up six points for the Highlanders with a third-place finish in the men's 5000 meter run with a time of 15:07.67.
 
Kelsey Jackson earned a seventh-place finish in the women's 100 meter dash clocking in with a time of 13.70.  Alexis Caufield and Diane Avecillas also represented NJIT in the event.
 
Middle distance runner Alexandra Arnold finished with a time of 2:33.77 in the women's 800 meter run while Breanne Hollenbach finished 23rd in the women's 5000 meter run with a time of 20:08.22.
 
In the women's discus throw, Breanna Gunnarson and Gabi Whalen finished 17th and 18th respectively as Whalen competed in the women's hammer throw recording a distance of 21.23m.
