NEWARK, NJ - The NJIT rugby team started off as an idea for a club by founder
Sal Sorace. Then, getting together with
Fraser Croad and Edison Jakupi, the three formed the rugby club at NJIT.
Â
The club gained interest among some students, who started coming to club practices and building the basis of the team.
Â
In the fall of 2012, Coach Mark Petraglia came on board and organized the club into an actual team, with practices happening every week. Coach Mark prepared the team and in the spring of 2013, the team played and won its first game against Morris U-23.
After a great start in the practice season in the spring, NJIT rugby gained
Kevin Holt as the assistant coach and joined the Empire Rugby Football Union in Division III. The team ended up with a great season and a great rookie season record of 5-2, losing only to rival Montclair State in the regular season as well as the league championship.
Â
With the great success in the rookie season in Division III, the coaches decided to move the team up to Division II, and signing the team up for the Tri-State Rugby Conference. NJIT Rugby has worked hard to get to where they are and are looking for future successes in their new league and new conference.
