Baseball Nips Coppin State In 11 Innings

WALDORF, MD—NJIT's Ed Charlton drove in the game-winning run in the top of the 11th inning on a two-out triple, as the visiting Highlanders pulled off a 4-3 11-inning victory over Coppin State Saturday evening in the opener of a non-conference weekend baseball series.
 
The win at the Regency Furniture Stadium was the first of the season for the Highlanders and first for head coach Brian Guiliana, who improved to 1-5 on the season, while Coppin State falls to 1-6 on the young season.
 
With one out in the top of the 11th inning, senior Jeff Peterson drew a walk to begin the inning. Freshman Nick Rabasco moved Peterson into scoring position with a groundout to second setting up Charlton's game-winning triple giving NJIT a 4-3 lead.
 
In the bottom of the 11th for Coppin State, pinch-hitter David Hamlett hit a one-out single but after a strikeout, pinch-runner Mike Wright was thrown out attempting to steal second to end the game.
 
The winning pitcher in the contest went to junior RHP Matt Coughlin (1-0), who came into relieve starting LHP Tripp Davis in the middle of the seventh inning. 
 
Couglin pitched four scoreless inning while striking out six Eagles to earn the win.  Davis, in his third start of the season, pitched the first 6.2 innings, scattering six hits while striking out six and giving up three runs (one earned).
 
The loss went to Coppin State's second pitcher, Michael Roberts, who dropped to 0-1 on the season, pitching 5.1 innings, letting up six hits while striking out five Highlanders. 

NJIT's Peterson finished the day 1-for-2 with one run and two RBI while Charlton went 2-for-6 including the game-winning RBI triple in the top of the 11th.  Five different Highlanders registered one hit in the victory.

Coppin State's Brown hit 3-for-5 with one run and CF Chris Kashangaki finished 2-for-5 with one RBI.  Dower and Pitts were the two other Eagles to drive in runs Saturday in the loss.
 
Coppin State struck first in the bottom of the second inning when Alex Brown singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Nathan Pitts RBI single for a 1-0 lead.
 
NJIT knotted the game, 1-1, in the top of the fifth on a RBI single by Rabasco scoring Scott Brosman, who started off the inning reaching first on an error by Coppin State's third baseman.
 
The Eagles tied the score in the bottom of the eighth, 3-3, after scoring a pair of runs.  Coppin State's third baseman Pitts reached on an NJIT error to begin the inning and Jay Maletz followed with a walk. Both runners moved up when pinch-hitter Anderson Burgess grounded out to third.
 
After a strikeout by Davis, the final batter the senior would face, Kashangaki delivered a single scoring Pitts cutting the lead to 3-2.
 
The Eagles tied the contest on a single by 2B Colin Dower driving in Maletz for a 3-3 score but Coppin State was unable to score despite loading the bases with two outs.
 
The two teams will return to action on Sunday with a double header beginning at 11am.
