HACKENSACK, NJ—The NJIT men's and women's indoor track and field team competed at the FDU Knights Classic Sunday held at the Rothman Center.
The FDU Knights Classic featured host FDU, St Francis Brooklyn, Iona, LIU Brooklyn and NJIT.
Only two days into the season
John Porteous stepped up to the 300 meter run (after winning the 200 meter run on Friday at the Fordham Season Opener) and not only captured first place but broke the NJIT school record with a time of (34.55) set back in 2007. In the process, he also made the finals of the 55m (6.67) and led off the 4x200 relay quartet, which consisted of
James Meyers,
Kwadwo Banahene, and
Emmanuel Agyen, who finished third just missing the NJIT school record by less than .5 seconds.
Jason Poppe tied his two-day old record in the triple jump (13.14m; 43' 1.50) finishing in second place.
Senior
Daniel Rondon opened his indoor season in the 3000 meter with a second place finish with a time of (8:47.46) almost 30 seconds ahead of last year at this meet.
Freshman Agyen has been shadowing
John Porteous but is coming into his own by breaking the freshman 55m record (6.75).
On the women side, senior
Kelsey Jackson broke the NJIT 300 meter record (43.51) while freshmen
Cristina De Cristofaro leaped into the record books in the long jump with a distance of (4.93m; 16'2.25).
Alexandra Arnold broke the 600 meter record (1:46.25) while senior
Ybrahina Cohen placed second in the 1000 at (3:25.48).
"This was another successful meet for us since many athletes were ahead of their performances from this meet last year but quite a few improved from just only two days ago." Head coach
Al Alonso commented after the meet.
NJIT will return to action on January 4 at the Crowell Open hosted by Army in West Point, NY.
