The Highlanders (9-15 overall, 3-4 in Great West) look to sweep the series with Texas-Pan American on Thursday. The Highlanders nipped the Broncs, 41-40, in Texas on January 21.
Rayven Johnson hit a layup with 7.4 seconds left for the victory.
Johnson leads the Highlanders in three categories – points (11.3), rebounds (8.1) and steals (26). The junior forward has posted six double-doubles on the season and is averaging (11.6ppg) and (9.4rpg) in seven conference games ranking her sixth in scoring and second in rebounds. Saturday vs. North Dakota, Johnson raised her season total in rebounds to 186, setting a new NJIT D1 single-season record, surpassing Taiwo Oyelola (182; 2009-10).
The Highlanders have two freshmen averaging from 8.8ppg to 8.0ppg.
Denisa Domiterova, who has made 16 starts this season, ranks 51
st in the nation in three-point field goals per game (2.4) and 76
th in three-point field goal percentage (34.6). She is ninth in the conference with 46 three-pointers. Olson, a guard, who has played in every game (24) with 18 starts, is averaging 8.0ppg in conference play. She is ranked 268
th in the nation in three-point field goals made (1.5).
Classmate
Nicole Maticka leads the team with 63 total blocks and ranks 18
th (only freshman) in the nation in blocks per game (2.6).
Sophomore
Uju Nwankwo has 40 blocks on the season, ranking her 80 in the nation (1.7). As a starter, Nwankwo is averaging 9.4ppg and 6.4rpg in 12 games and has at least one block or one steal in 19 out of 24 games.
Texas-Pan American (9-14 overall, 2-3 in Great West) will finish out its five-game stretch on the road at NJIT on Thursday and Chicago State on Saturday before returning home to Texas where the Broncs will close out the regular season.
The Broncs are 1-2 on the road in conference play and are 3-8 overall in 2011-12. Texas-Pan American picked up a 55-41 victory at Houston Baptist but lost two straight at Utah Valley (66-51) and North Dakota (93-60).
In the first meeting of the season for the two teams, the Broncs led by as many as 16, after a 21-3 run, that stretched the score to 23-7 with six minutes left in the first half.
The Broncs are led by junior guard Bianca Torre, the only double-figure scorer on the team with 10.3ppg. Senior forward Donna Jackson follows with 9.3ppg and ranks second with 6.3rpg. Classmate Adanna Opara leads the Broncs with 6.4rpg.
The Highlanders hold an 8-5 all time record vs. Texas-Pan American. The first series took place in 2006-07.
