HACKENSACK, NJ—The NJIT men's indoor track and field team opened up the 2012 season at the Knights Classic Sunday hosted by Fairleigh Dickinson at the Rothman Center.
The NJIT men open the 2012-13 campaign with a 3-1 to start with victories over Iona (90-32), LIU-Brooklyn (81.50-37.50) and St. Francis Brooklyn (78-56) with the teams' lone loss coming at the hands of host Fairleigh Dickinson (77-62.50).
Senior
Christian Baumbach placed second in the men's 3000 meter run with a time of 8:58.50. Highlanders
Scott Rizzo (fifth),
Daniel Rondon (eighth) and
Lucas Lamb (10
th) all finished in the top 10 of the event.
Morgan Akins won the men's long jump with a distance of 19-11 and placed second in the men's 55H with a time of 7.90 improving from last year by .1 seconds.
Freshman
Jason Poppe won the men's triple jump and broke the NJIT varsity and freshman record in the first event of the day with a distance of 40-06 and later came back and took second in the long jump with a distance of 19-05.25.
The men's 4x800 consisting of
Moheb Thomas, Rizzo,
Matt Brown and
Nathaniel Bailey II took third.
The team is back in action on Friday when they travel to Fordham University.
