Women’s Track Opens Up 2012 Campaign at Knights Classic

—The NJIT women's indoor track and field team opened up the 2012 campaign at the Knights Classic posting a 4-0 record on the day hosted by Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday at the Rothman Center.

The Highlanders registered victories against all four opponents Sunday – Fairleigh Dickinson (77-74), Iona (99-35), LIU-Brooklyn (82-37) and St. Francis Brooklyn (88-46).

The quartet of Catherine Cohen, Aya Elsekhely, Ybrahina Cohen and Ewelina Marut placed first and broke the NJIT 4x800 relay record previously held by Megan Higgins, Vanessa Escalera, Amanda Hefferan and Nicole Kerrison last set in 2010. 

Marut, a senior from Rutherford, NJ, took third in the women's 3000 meter run with a time of 10:44.00, nine second ahead of her time from last season while Ybrahina Cohen and Breanne Hollenbach took sixth and seventh place in the evet.

Sophomore Esther Alfaro tied her meet record in the women's 55H with a time of 9.40, good for fifth place.  Two other Highlanders represented in the event were Chelsea Chamra and Kelly Smith

Catherine Cohen took second in the women's 1000 meter run with a time of 3:23.10 while Elsekhely placed fifth, one second ahead of her time from last year.

Kelly Smith finished second in the women's long jump with a distance of 16-01 and took third in the triple with a distance of 34-00, just missing both school records. 

Newcomer Taylor Everett took third in the women's shot put with a distance of 28-01. 

The women's 4x200 consisting of Breanna Gunnarson, Kelsey Jackson, Alfaro, and Chamra took third.

The team is back in action on Friday when they travel to Fordham University.
