NEWARK, NJ – The NJIT Highlanders men's and women's outdoor track and field teams split competition over the weekend, taking part in the IC4A/ECAC Championships and the Paul Donahue Invitational.
IC4A/ECAC Championships
Freshman Jason Alvarez continued his impressive debut season, breaking his own school record in the men's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.51 to earn a silver medal. Alvarez improved his previous record by 0.03 seconds.
Senior Jason Ballen earned a silver medal in the men's javelin with a throw of 58.86 meters.
In the men's 400-meter hurdles, Eatoniel Brown also claimed silver, finishing in 53.39.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Brown, Moustafa Abdelaal, Elisha Bugasch, and Pietro Carpentari added another silver medal to the tally, posting a time of 3:16.75.
On the women's side, sophomore Zaidah Lightener captured bronze in the long jump with a leap of 6.11 meters, setting a new NJIT school record in the process.
Freshman Dakota Jones placed in the top eight in the women's 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.80.
Freshman Diego Reyes delivered a strong performance in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase, finishing 11th overall with a time of 9:46.53.
In the 110-meter hurdles preliminaries, freshman Jason Alvarez placed fourth in 14.57, advancing to the finals.
Freshman Caleb Duvelson recorded a ninth-place finish in the men's shot put with a mark of 15.54 meters, while junior Andrew Sabeh placed 10th in the hammer throw with a distance of 52.29 meters.
In the 200 meter, Tyler Passmore just missed a top-three finish, finishing in fourth place with a time of 21.99.
Two Highlanders finished in the top eight – William Mitchell (sixth) and Aidan Groff (eighth) in the men's 3000 meter run.
In the men's triple jump, Matin Mahmoud placed fifth with a distance of 14.27m.

NJIT saw record-breaking performances in the 800 meters on both sides. Freshman Ryan Lang clocked a time of 1:52.31 to break a seven-year-old school record, while Hayley Lucido set a new women's program mark with a time of 2:11.16.
