NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Iona scored once in the first half and added two goals late in the second before NJIT finally got on the board in the Gaels' 3-1 non-conference women's soccer win over visiting NJIT Friday afternoon in the season opener for Highlanders.
Iona (1-2) scored its first goal of the match at 22:38 when freshman forward Melissa Frederick scored her first collegiate goal assisted by senior Kerrie Deignan.
The Gaels, who lost their previous two matches (0-1 vs. Temple; 1-2 vs. Temple), made it 2-0 when junior defender Laura Jackson scored on a penalty kick at 72:07. The goal was the first of the season for Jackson.
Iona scored 25 seconds later when Samantha Fiorenzo notched her first collegiate goal. Shannon Meara was credited with the assist.
NJIT avoided the shutout on Friday when freshman Kylie Jones knocked home her first collegiate goal, converting on a pass from classmate Megan Dellavalle. Dellavalle, from Santa Rosa, CA, posted her first assist of the year in her Highlander debut.
Iona's Trista Rivera made four saves to earn the win in goal while NJIT's Anna Kornmuller, making her first collegiate start in goal, was credited with three saves.
NJIT (0-1) will return to action on Tuesday, August 30 at 4pm when the Highlanders travel to Staten Island, NY to face Wagner.
The match was originally scheduled for Sunday, August 28 but due to the expectation of Hurricane Irene hitting the New Jersey/New York area the match was postponed.
