Track & Field Opens Spring Season

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ –
The NJIT men's and women's track and field teams opened its 2011 spring season competing at the 16th Annual Monmouth Season Opener.

 

The meet was scored as multiple dual meets among the Division I programs competing.

 

Senior weight thrower Josh Dolisca placed third in the men's hammer throw with a distance of 50.46m.

 

Sophomore distance runner Ewelina Marut finished in the top 5 of the women's 5000 meter race clocking in with a time of 18:23.56.

 

In the women's pole vault, Nicole Vazquez placed fourth with a height of 2.74m while Gabi Whalen placed 24th in the women's discus throw with a distance of 26.67m.

 

Freshman Kelsey Jackson was fifth in the women's 200 meter dash at 26.43 and added an 11th place finish in the high jump with a height of 1.47m.

 

The women's 4x100 relay which consisted of Jackson, Vazquez, Breanna Gunnarson and Vincia Jackson placed fourth with a time of 51.45.

 

Both men's and women's sprint medley relays were broken – the women finishing with a time of 4:51.92 and the men at 3:54.70.

 

NJIT's Brian Mendez and Daniel Rondon set personal bests in the men's 5000 meter run.  Mendez placed second with a time of 15:22.55 and Rondon followed in at third at 15:26.32.

 

Both teams finished with a 6-2 record at the meet.  The men defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, Fordham, Marist, Rider, St. Francis (NY), and Stony Brook.  On the women's side, NJIT topped Fairleigh Dickinson, Fordham, Iona, Marist, St. Francis (NY) and Stony Brook.

 

“A total of 11 NJIT records were broken on our first spring meet of the season which was pretty impressive considering the cold and windy conditions.” Head coach Al Alonso stated.
