Women’s Basketball Preview vs. Utah Valley/Chicago State

NJIT will play its last two regular season games at home, beginning with a 5:30pm Great West Conference contest on Thursday vs. Utah Valley at the Fleisher Athletic Center.  The Highlanders topped Utah Valley, 55-52, in the first meeting on January 29 in Orem, UT.

 

The Highlanders will close out the 2010-11 regular season on Saturday at 2pm and host Great West Conference opponent Chicago State.  The Cougars won the first meeting in Chicago, 83-42. 

 

Saturday will also mark the final home games for seniors Jessica Gerald and Ivana Seric.

 

NJIT is led by Gerald with 337 total points (15.3ppg).  Gerald is shooting 81 percent from the free throw line (90-111).  Sophomore forward Rayven Johnson, the Highlanders other double-figure scorer, whose point total on the season is 269 points (10.8ppg).  Johnson ranks second on the tam with 157 boards (6.3rpg).

 

Seric leads the team in four categories – rebounds (160; 6.4rpg), assists (75), steals (35) and blocks (23).

 

Scouting Utah Valley … Utah Valley will play its final regular season game on Thursday in Newark.  The Wolverines are coming off an 82-58 home victory over Houston Baptist.  Four players scored in double-figures paced by Kim Bell and Jenna Johnson, each scoring 21 points.

 

On the season, Sammie Jensen leads Utah Valley with a double-double averaging 13.5ppg and 10.7rpg.  Jensen has 13 career double-doubles.  Johnson ranks second on the team with 13.1ppg while junior Abbey Beutler is averaging 9.1ppg and 4.9 assists.

 

Utah Valley comes into the game with a 6-20 overall record, 4-7 in the conference. 

 

Scouting Chicago State … Chicago State (19-9, 10-1 in the conference) has clinched at least a share of the Great West Conference title with its 71-57 victory over defending champion North Dakota.  The Cougars also clinched the top seed in the GWC Postseason Tournament, which will be hosted by Utah Valley on March 9-12.

 

South Dakota is the only team with a chance to share the title with the Cougars.  The Coyotes must win their next two games at Texas-Pan American and Houston Baptist to stay in the hunt for a share of the championship.

 

Chicago State is led by three double-figure scorers -- Tressa Beckel with 17.4ppg and 225 rebounds (8.0rpg), Courtney Waldon's 16.9ppg and guard Janay Dockery's 12.4ppg.  Dockery ranks second on the team with 110 assists.
